The Texas Quote of the Day finds early Texas iconoclast William Cowper Brann, utilizing his typical articulate savagery, to denounce women who wear birds as hat decorations: "The woman who will sacrifice a songster [bird] on the altar of her vanity is wholly devoid of sentiment. There's no more music in her soul than in a ham sandwich, less poetry in her life than can be found in a horned frog. A bird on the bonnet means that the woman beneath it would embalm her baby and wear it as a brooch if Dame Fashion decreed it. A wise husband would hesitate to insure his life in favor of such a woman, for she'd pour hot lead in his ear or dope his dinner to secure the price of a new dress." ------ William Cooper Brann, The Iconoclast, 1897

So let me get this straight... Baylor tells TPUSA we can invite community members (non-students) to our event, but then reverses their decision after some progressive students complained, forcing us to tell 4,500 ticket holders not to come. Baylor then greenlights a progressive counter-programming event "All Are Neighbors" and decides community members CAN attend that. The Southern Baptist school's hypocrisy is documented right here in the student newspaper for all to see. What gives, @Baylor?

@MoundLore All blame for wars and displacement happening to Indians in North America before 1789, need to placed at the feet of the country that actually caused the harm, and not lazily blamed on the US. This one, as noted, belongs to the French. Go to France and ask them about it.

Early French engraving of an attack by Champlain, with French troops and Indian allies, on an Onondaga village in 1615. The village was elaborately fortified with moats and a double stockade. The fire of the white men's guns from the platform they built terrified the Onondagas and the village was soon taken. This was the beginning of the hostility of the Iroquois toward the French, that finally cost the French their empire in North America.

@MoundLore Why do you say “we” cut it down when you really mean “they “ cut it down. Always remember, “the past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.” It is a fallacy to share guilt with people you never met and didn’t know.

Lumber crews photographed themselves standing in felled trunks the size of cabins. They built dance halls and saloons inside hollow redwoods. One giant sequoia—the Discovery Tree—was 25 feet wide and 1,244 years old. We cut it down for a museum exhibit.

There were once trees in this country so large, they blocked out the sun for miles. They shaped trails, towns, and spirit. Now most are gone and most people don’t even know what was lost. Not metaphorically. Physically. Entire forests erased. 🧵

@WilliamShatner I'm not a "Trekie" by any means (far from it really), but nevertheless I began watching the Original Series out of mere curiosity about a year ago. Fast forward a year, I have pretty memorized every episode! Love how a lot of the themes are still so relevant today

On this day in 1898, controversial journalist William Cowper Brann was fatally shot in the back by Tom E. Davis on a Waco street. Brann managed to pull his own gun and kill Davis. Earlier in the decade Brann's newspaper, the Iconoclast, had launched a series of vitriolic attacks, especially on Baptists, Episcopalians, blacks, women, and anything British. He also went after nearby Baylor University, which he called "that great storm-center of misinformation." Brann was subsequently kidnapped on one occasion and beaten on another, and his supporters had a deadly gunfight with Baylor partisans. Davis, who killed Brann, was an irate supporter of Baylor. Traces of Texas reader Deborah Calhoun Collier was so kind as to share this awesome circa 1970 photo of her ex-mother-in-law with Willie Nelson at a dive bar in Goliad. Deborah sent in a couple of other photos taken at this time and when I say it's a dive bar I mean ... it's a dive bar. It's AMAZING to think that the man who had already written "Crazy" and "Night Life" and "Funny How Time Slips Away" was playing in a place like that but ... he was. Willie's walked the walk and talked the talk, hasn't he? He was in the woods, so to speak, for 20+ years before he finally broke through to the big time, but he was undaunted, always believing in his talent, scraping and grinding and eeking it out. And aren't Deborah's ex-mother-in-law's glasses fantastic, too? Thank you, Deborah. This made my day!

Baylor Football honored Chris Platt Jr as a Baylor Legend yesterday. Of course his stats speak for themselves, but he is also the most loyal player and alum of all time. Still wears his Baylor swag everyday. It’s fitting he was locker-mates with Jalen Pitre in the day.

@TrueWestMag The Mexican government in Sonora was literally paying money for Apache scalps. John Johnson availed himself of this murderous business plan. For this attack in New Mexico, Johnson received 100 pesos from the government of Mexico. Mexico fought with hostile Apaches until 1915.
