Revised Poem Inspired by Edgar Guest’s It Takes a Heap o’ Livin’
It takes a heap o’ livin’ to knit two hearts in grace,
When hunger twists their love and sets a lonesome space.
He strays to fleeting shadows, lustful eyes on youth’s bright glow,
Her heart shuts tight, feelin’ second, lost in her own woe.
She caught him watchin’ porn, when he thought none would see,
A wound that carved her deeper than his lust could ever free.
I’m just his urge, she mourns, no value in his sight,
While he sighs, She locks me out, and dims my heart’s own light.
She craves his tender vow, his love to lift her high,
But seals her love away, convinced his heart’s a lie.
He don’t see her fear, her ache to feel she’s still the one,
She don’t see his need, his hurt when all her warmth is gone.
Sex has stole love’s throne, a thief they both let reign,
Each builds a wall of blame, too proud to bear the pain.
But what’s your aim, you two-your base life or your best?
To cling to bitter hurts or seek a love that’s blessed?
A foot rub’s humble gift, a sink of dishes cleared,
Emptyin’ the trash for love-such acts make love revered.
No greater love, said Christ, than layin’ down your pride,
Serve as friends in Him, let selfish wants subside.
So turn from wanderin’ eyes, from hearts that turn to stone,
With patience, build anew the love that’s yours alone.
For intimacy’s no prize to seize, but trust to understand,
Two souls, forgiven, held by God’s redeeming hand.
