The guy squirting water into Zach Ertz’s mouth is Joe O’Pella. He’s an athletic trainer that’s been with the team for over 15 years at this point. NFL teams don’t really have water boys, athletic trainers are usually the ones responsible for having water on the practice field and during games, but this post is absolutely hilarious. A guy who rehabbed my ACL tear in my second year, has a masters degree from Pitt, and has years of experience keeping Eagles players healthy and on the field being called a “Waterboy” is crazy, and I’m already giving him shit for it, but good lord this post is so wildly misleading. Either way, thought I’d clear the air, that the people with Water Bottles during games actually serve much bigger roles on NFL Teams.

Wow: NFL waterboys earn over 3 THOUSAND dollars per game, which averages out to more than $50K per season, not including tips. Waterboys also attend practices, handle locker room prep, and travel with the team. What a fantastic job to have 💸📈

First two league matches of the season in the books. Early season results can be ugly as we teach the game, the systems, and the mentalities needed in rugby to newer players. Had to pivot through some key injuries this week as well.

The athletes I work with are elite at getting things done. They love to train, to grind, to check the box. But sometimes, that very strength becomes the problem. The drive to do more can get in the way of doing what matters most. That’s the difference between a clock approach and a compass approach to your system. The clock is about time—reps, hours, output. The compass is about direction—priorities, standards, what actually moves the needle. A lot of people initially default to the clock approach: More swings, more lifts, more film, more work. But without the right direction, you just become more efficient at the wrong things. Direction is more important than speed. Don’t just ask yourself, “How much am I doing?” Instead, ask, “Is this actually moving me forward?” Get the compass right, and let the clock follow. Try it: Before your next work block, take a moment to pause. Ask yourself why you’re about to do what you’re about to do. Clarify the purpose behind your actions—let your direction guide your effort.

False. Pair the two ideas: Wendler and Holler, and watch what happens. Smart weight room programming, paired with explosive movements patterns, which are tracked weekly, will change your program completely.
Andrew Koontz@koontzjr_

This book came out 16 years ago and most football coaches would be better off adopting its programming than just about anything else available to them, including so called “sprint based” approaches

Read, then re-read, then re-read, then bookmark, then return periodically when you get lost in the swamp of Husker Power 1970s methods. Weight training supplements and supports development, mitigates injury risk, but is not the magic solution. Full stop.
Tony Holler@pntrack

The argument of stronger = faster, has been a contentious subject for many years. Strength is good. Strength supplements speed. Strength gains can and will often improve speed. Sprinters lift. Sprinters typically have amazing-looking bodies. But stronger isn’t always faster. “The strongest are seldom the fastest. ~Boo Schexnayder Power lifters and bodybuilders are seldom the fastest guys on the track team. We learn by stories. ⤵️ When Covid shut everyone down, I had 8 fast sophomore track athletes who also played 🏈. These 8 guys found a gym and lifted like madmen. They had nothing else to do. They got super strong and posted flex-pics often. When things opened up a year later, one of the 8 was faster (slightly). 7 of 8 were slower by an average of one mph. They never got their speed back during their junior track season. None of the 7 ran track as seniors. They continued to play 🏈. Lifting in the absence of sprinting, jumping, bouncing, and throwing will often make athletes slower. Is that anti-strength? No. But, stronger ≠ faster. It’s more correct to say that athletes who get faster, get stronger. 🏋️‍♂️ Just because fast guys are strong doesn’t mean strong guys are fast. Sprint, lift, jump, bounce, throw… but make speed the priority.
