I think Tre Johnson has had a nice rookie season and I still really like him but I would not be shocked if Will Riley was the best player the Wizards drafted last year. I like both players so not trying to tear down Tre Johnson here, just an interesting comparison.

@bjpf_ Do you have confidence that Philon can get back to the level of defender he was last season? It’s the one thing holding me back with him since he’s basically answered every question I had about him offensively.

updated my film-based grades that aim to estimate play-to-play impact, projecting to the next level, scaled per of 100 possessions and relative to the class here's the offensive grade ranking, 17 (of 83) prospcets with an offensive grade in the 80th percentile or above

@shoooobb The contact aversion was pretty bad. So many times he would have an angle to the rim but would face any sort of contact and immediately settle for a mid range jumper or floater. Lift on layups was rough at times but that seems more injury related than anything to me.

@Wiz_Weekly i agree, the biggest to me was pr ably the contact aversion, these guys are 18-19, he has a good frame that i’m sure will fill out the lift on layups kinda worries me as well but his touch is so crazy that’s it’s like okay but you could see the impact in the 2nd half of the year

what’s the line between believing in DP’s priors as a lead guard and being cautious about the difference in burst between his senior HS season and freshman college season?

@shoooobb But I do think the handle got better as the year went on so that’s encouraging. Still issues there for him to sort out though.

@shoooobb I think the burst was hampered by injuries but part of it is probably also the jump in competition. Even if the burst comes back, my bigger worry is the handle and how he really struggles with ball control when driving through contact. That’s why he settles for a lot of jumpers.

Still think there is a world where he’s the best player from this class and most of these issues were due to KU’s roster and the injuries, but I don’t want to just excuse the issues he showed this year. Still an awesome player though, don’t want people to forget that.

Even with those flaws, he’s still locked in my top 4. Elite shooter with some self creation chops, the high school stuff was elite, and he’s an awesome defender.

Kansas should not have committed that last foul. They intentionally put themselves in the bonus and you could see Jackson was afraid of fouling the ball handler on that last drive. Should have stopped at 5 fouls. Also no clue why they weren’t ready to help on that drive.

Iowa State’s defense is fascinating to me. Their scheme is so unique with their no middle principles and how they trap everything in the corner. Wonder if other college teams will try to replicate what they’re doing.

@JBBHoops1 Yeah he never plays off 2 and it forces him to take some really tough shots at times
