I still get emotional looking at this photo of the first time I held Payton. So many emotions were wrapped up in that moment. 7 to 8 months of unknowns and not being given answers as to what we were walking into… We didn’t even know if we’d get to hold her alive. It’s jarring to look at photos from this period in our lives though due to how stable things are now. It almost doesn’t seem right that I can be sitting here on a Saturday morning in my favorite chair while I snuggle my daughter back to sleep in my arms. If I could go back in time to talk to myself in the moment captured here, I’d say that everything’s going to be ok. I’d say that God’s going to show Himself in ways that I never imagined were possible. I’d say that Payton is going to teach you things that you never would have known without her. I’d say that your heart is going to expand to have a greater capacity to love others and strive to bring social justice in a country that’s filled with injustice right now. And I’d say that there will come a day where you’re going to be able to sit and enjoy peace-filled moments in your home with the little one in your arms. And that you’re blessed beyond comprehension.
