My first and last Eurovision Song Contest. Never again! A cacophony of drivel and preening pixies with big egos and little talent. But interesting window on the Americanisation of European popular culture.
American-style presenters with weak scripts, fake bonhomie/enthusiasm and bad delivery tied to the teleprompter trying to generate phoney spontaneity. One of the two Swedish anchors even had an American accent.
Most of the songs are US derivative and mainly sung in American accents, especially the women, who all sound alike (and American). Total absence of originality, except for the occasionally bizarre (most of whom we’ll never hear from again).
But it also illustrates the triumph of English across the continent. Nearly all the songs in English, all the presentation in English, all the interviews in English, even juries give their results in English.
Oh well, it’s been an education, of sorts.
