2026. This year we're investing and directing our energies on only what matters: purpose. Refuse rage/baiting, spend little time doom scrolling, value your time deeply and refuse to waste it on agendas that aren't yours. This year, we build generationally, intentionally. 🙏🏾

This kizungu mingi na catwalk to avoid addressing the idiocy of building a railway next to another one.
Kenny Kaburu@KennyKaburu

This headline by The Standard is not just misleading, it is a deliberate distortion of facts to fit a familiar anti-state narrative. You cannot compare Sh693 million per kilometre from earlier SGR phases with up to Sh1.75 billion per kilometre for the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba extension and pretend it is the same project. It is not. The first figure comes from Mombasa-Nairobi and Nairobi-Naivasha, built largely on flatter terrain, under concessional financing, and with limited auxiliary infrastructure. The extension, on the other hand, is a far more complex corridor, cutting through escarpments, valleys, and unstable ground across western Kenya, requiring extensive bridges (79 major railway bridges, with a combined length of about 42-43 km), tunnels (8 tunnels, total length 14.26 km) viaducts, culverts (460 culverts) and heavy engineering works. More importantly, the higher figure being sensationalised is not just the railway line. It is a full corridor investment that include land compensation, stations (28 stations), inland depots, signalling systems, and integration with Kisumu Port and regional logistics. That is why the total project cost is projected at about Sh500-650 billion, a comprehensive infrastructure ecosystem, not just tracks on the ground. Then there are the economic realities The Standard conveniently ignores. Since the first SGR phase, - The Kenyan shilling has depreciated significantly - Global construction costs (steel, fuel, labour) have risen sharply - Financing has shifted from purely concessional loans to blended and commercial structures, which include interest and risk costs All these factors naturally push up the per-kilometre figure. That is basic infrastructure economics and not necessarily a scandal. What we are seeing here is a classic case of false equivalence of taking two different phases, with different terrain, scope, and financing, and forcing a comparison to manufacture outrage. This is why The Standard has built a reputation for being consistently and notoriously anti-state in its framing, prioritising shock headlines over honest context. They opposed the SGR before it was built. They questioned it during construction. Today, they ignore its impact on freight efficiency and regional trade, only to recycle the same skepticism dressed as 'new revelations.' Facts matter. Context matters. And Kenyans deserve better than headlines designed to mislead rather than inform.

@FinLitBae 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 summiting Kili trumps all others. Pls, I don't even bother competing with what we call the Chepdadas in school (they look like Team Kenya Olympic athletes those ones!). I sip my collagen tea and stick to Satima and big mountain humble brags.

One must know when to stop. In 2022 I was 5th and the problem is my then 5 year old classmates parents are first time parents and their first borns age is my last borns. I got a podium finish in 2024 bagging an actual silver medal and I refuse to do any more races. People will be fielding energetic Maininis while I am the age where I take omega3 and probiotic yoghurt daily. I told my daughter to tell anyone who asks that her mother summited Kilimanjaro and will now only watch and cheer others.

Found an AI perspective I’d never heard before from a teacher of teens. It’s a bit meandering but your three minutes will be well used.

If you aren’t forcing yourself to deliberate daily, you’ll forget how. Our example person can make 300 deliberate decisions a day before they’re fatigued. If AI handles 200 of those 300 questions, their brain will shut down at 100 instead of 300. Billionaires want you at 0.

I want to understand this 🥴🥴🥴. Yaani some people have lungs of steel and bodies of titanium when the rest of us are mere flesh coz hii mlima watu hupanda in days, not hours. And yes, Mweka is short, but the elevation gain ni kama kuna a different internal combustion system!!!

These people went into the village, cut down trees, and built these ugly, unnecessary monstrosities, and for whom exactly? What an eyesore in the middle of nowhere! Surely!!!! Hii ni nini???

@_K1R1M1 You go to the village and build 5 storey tiny flats and ask people to move into them. Honestly. Who would want that? Imagine your ageing parent being forced to climb to 5th floor to access a cold flat ilhali alikuwa na bungalow yake tu vizuri, not bothering anyone. Honestly!

@mwabilimwagodi2 That's what I keep asking! Assuming even the affordable housing scheme is genuine, surely, what are these concrete gulags that look like Kowloon Walled City? Honestly, honestly. Was this the best way to lift people out of poverty? Was this the only available design???

Are we sure these are not detention camps being built around the country in readiness for the the 2027 elections? Guys I am sorry I do not wish to be a conspiracy theorist but who in Migori is going to vacate their ancestral land to live in this Gulag???

@ThAverageMarcus Let me ask you something because you've come vizuri: is this the best way to help people in the area? Look at these buildings, that perimeter wall (and trees were cut, let's be honest). Was this the best use of taxpayer money? These buildings?
