In 2025, Sweden celebrated 250 years of Jewish life in the country. With antisemitism rising globally, we need to ensure the safety of Jewish citizens and enable Jews to live openly and proudly without fear. We were honored to welcome Stefan Olsson (@Spesam) and Victoria Tiblom (@VTiblom) of the Swedish Parliament (@Sverigesriksdag) to WJC’s New York Office this week, and to have allies in this shared mission of protecting our Jewish communities.

14 years ago today, on the morning of March 19, 2012, an Islamic terrorist opened fire at a Jewish school in Toulouse, France, as children were being dropped off to start the school day. Four people were killed in cold blood: Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, 30, his children Arieh, 5, and Gabriel, 3, and student Myriam Monsenego, 8. We honor their memory. That began a period of deadly violence targeting Jews in Europe and western countries which continues today. The murder of Jewish children, at their school, shook France's Jewish community to the core. As a result, Jewish life in Europe today is much different than it was even 15 years ago. Our Jewish communities need protection - and every government, authority, and civil society needs to be part of that.

It was an honor to attend an exceptional dinner hosted by the @WorldJewishCong President Ronald S. Lauder in New York, as Head of International Affairs at @Le_CRIF and Member of the WJC Exec Committee. Deep gratitude and admiration for @lauder_ronald generosity and leadership.
World Jewish Congress@WorldJewishCong

As antisemitism rises to levels unseen in generations, WJC President @lauder_ronald brought together leaders from @BoardofDeputies, @CIJAinfo, @Le_CRIF, @DAIAArgentina, @ECAJewry, and @ZentralratJuden, alongside @ADL and @Conf_of_Pres counterparts at his home in New York. We will meet this moment as we always have — by standing together and strengthening one another.

We welcome the adoption by Albania’s parliament designating the Islamic Republic of Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism and declaring the IRGC as a terrorist organization. This important step acknowledges the reality of a regime that fuels terror, destabilizes the region, and threatens democratic societies worldwide. The international community must act with clarity and take coordinated action to hold Iran accountable.

We congratulate Argentina on beginning its presidency of @TheIHRA. Jewish communities are being severely impacted by antisemitism around the world. We need to lead the charge in both safeguarding the memory of the Holocaust and combating antisemitism – and guiding countries on best practices in this regard. We look forward to working closely with our affiliate communities in Argentina in this regard, including @InfoAMIA , @DAIAArgentina, and @CongresoJudio. In Argentina, President @JMilei has been a strong ally of the Jewish people.

Two people were wounded and killed overnight in an Iranian ballistic missile impact in Ramat Gan. According to Israeli media, the victims are a couple in their 70s. We pray for the safety of all civilians currently impacted by the strikes.

We welcome the Dutch House of Representatives’ vote today to ban the Muslim Brotherhood in the Netherlands, joining the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Austria, and many other countries. The Muslim Brotherhood is an extremist movement that has long worked to undermine Western societies from within. They must be confronted and acknowledged as a severe threat to democratic societies, and this is a step in the right direction.

🔴On March 17, 1992, the Israeli embassy in Argentina was bombed in a terrorist attack. 29 people were killed and hundreds were injured. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack. Just two years later in 1994, Hezbollah also bombed the AMIA Jewish community building in Buenos Aires, the worst terror attack in Latin American history. 🔴More than 30 years later, no one has been brought to justice for these crimes. Hezbollah’s links to the Islamic Republic of Iran show their involvement in both. Today, more than 30 years later, they are still exporters of terrorism targeting both Israel and Jewish communities globally.

Last week, WJC’s New York Office hosted a delegation of senators from 🇵🇾 Paraguay, a country home to a vibrant and engaged Jewish community. Paraguay has demonstrated longstanding bipartisan support for Israel, and an interest in strengthening institutional ties, including through a permanent parliamentary caucus with the Israeli Knesset and expanded cooperation in areas such as innovation, biotechnology, and security. Thank you to the visiting Senators @liliansamaniego @arnaldosamanieg @noepettersc.

A report by @SIGFSCI on antisemitism in Switzerland found that since October 7, 2023, antisemitism remains at extremely high levels. Moreover, wars in the Middle East have been a direct trigger for antisemitic incidents targeting Jews in Switzerland. ➡️There were 2,185 online antisemitic incidents, an increase of 36.9% than the year before. ➡️ There were 177 ‘real world’ or in-person antisemitic incidents, of which five were cases of physical assault. ➡️ 42% of online antisemitic incidents promote conspiracy theories. The most widely used is the ‘Khazar theory,’ which claims that Ashkenazi Jews are not originally from ancient Israel but from the Khazars, and therefore have no ‘right’ to settle in Israel. ‘Khazars’ or ‘Khazar mafia’ is used as a code word for ‘Jews.’ ➡️ For many Jewish people in Switzerland, antisemitism has become an everyday experience that affects their sense of security and participation in society. Canada, the US, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway. In March alone, multiple synagogues were attacked with car rammings, gunfire, explosive devices. Jewish communities must never be forced to fear for their safety when gathering to pray or practice their faith. That no lives were lost in these attacks is nothing short of miraculous. But miracles and complacency will not keep our communities safe. If leaders don’t act quickly, democracy and society as we know it are at risk of total collapse.

While Australia’s Jews are still mourning the victims of the Bondi Beach massacre, the community experienced something positive to rejoice in: The rededication of Sydney’s Great Synagogue. The synagogue was first consecrated in March 1878 and is one of Australia’s most significant Jewish heritage buildings. There was a rededication ceremony this past week, led by the Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth, Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, marking the completion of a major restoration project. Leaders within the WJC community and our affiliate, @ECAJewry, were part of the ceremony.

A disturbing pattern is emerging in Europe. In recent days, synagogues in Liège, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam have been attacked, with responsibility claimed by a previously unknown group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya. Security analysts believe the group may be part of Iran’s expanding network of proxy actors operating far beyond the Middle East. The attacks follow a clear pattern. Jewish institutions are targeted at night and the incidents are quickly amplified online to spread fear. These are not isolated acts of vandalism but deliberate attempts to intimidate Jewish communities and test the resolve of democratic societies. Governments must treat this threat with the seriousness it deserves, dismantle the networks behind these attacks, and ensure Jewish communities can live and worship in safety.
Joe Truzman@JoeTruzman

The Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right has claimed a fourth attack on a Jewish site in Europe this week. According to a video released a short time ago, the group targeted a synagogue in Amsterdam with an incendiary device on Saturday March 14.

In the early hours of Friday morning, a fire broke out at a Rotterdam synagogue. Thankfully there were no injuries and the fire died down quickly. There is noticeable damage to the front doors. Dutch police are investigating it as a suspected ‌arson. Jewish communities are bewildered. Because this is not an isolated event. Yesterday on March 12, there was a car ramming attack on a synagogue and Jewish school in Michigan. The same evening in Trondheim, Norway, a suspect was arrested for suspicious behavior around the synagogue.
