Female mummies in ancient Egypt were always more decomposed than their male counterparts. They discovered that this was because male bodies were embalmed a lot sooner than female bodies.
Female bodies were kept at the family home until they started to decompose in order to avoid necrophilia at the embalmers.

The study of ancient Egyptian mummies offers significant insights into the burial and embalming customs of the time, revealing distinct practices related to gender. One notable observation is that female mummies tend to show more advanced signs of decomposition than their male counterparts. This difference is largely attributed to the timing of the embalming process, with females typically undergoing embalming at a later stage than males.
In ancient Egypt, it was common for female corpses to remain at the family home for a longer period before the embalming process began. This delay allowed for the natural decomposition to take place, which was considered an essential step in the embalming procedure. It was believed that the body should undergo initial decomposition at home before it was properly prepared for the afterlife, ensuring it remained undisturbed until the right moment.
This delay and the subsequent decomposition process were deeply connected to the cultural and religious beliefs surrounding death in ancient Egypt. The careful handling of the body during this time reflected the Egyptians' reverence for the dead and their desire to ensure the body was properly preserved for the spiritual journey to the afterlife. These practices highlight the importance of maintaining the integrity of the body in accordance with religious expectations.
