the eternal american political debate is between people who think fascism is when the govt does something and people who think fascism is when the govt does something they don't like

A priest, a pastor and a rabbit walked in to a blood donation clinic. The nurse asked the rabbit: “What is your blood type?” “I am probably a type O”, said the rabbit.

@RevanWashington @woke8yearold I imagine there were many rumors, as it'd have been in his interest to cultivate explanations for his success (common with such frauds). Front-running was the explanation I'm most familiar with, but that was from a retrospective description of the case.

It's funny how in the 90s white collar crime was super complex and deep. Enron, Bernie Madoff defrauding people with complex webs of lies for decades, etc. In our era it's just people committing crimes and being like lol what are you gonna do arrest me

@woke8yearold Wasn't Madoff just a straight Ponzi but with an added flavor of "of course these returns aren't possible from legitimate enterprise but a guy as connected as me can do it wink wink"

@St_Rev I kinda assumed the new thing had just bought defunct letterhead, or showed up in numbers to a meeting where everyone else present was senile.

The acronyms get tiresome but CPUSA is an actual party going back a hundred years and ACP is a social media op from 2024, probably China/Iran backed.

@Plainsspeak @St_Rev say what you want about Italian Fascism, and there's a lot to say, but they actually made a crossover brand and not just a namespace collision.

We do not live in a rationalist, scientific civilization that disdains anything that cannot be measured or quantified (this was arguably true in 1960, not today), we live in a superstitious and mystical one with a few surviving islands of reason.

Jerry Coyne@Evolutionistrue

British Columbia has adopted indigenous "ways of knowing" as coequal to real science in secondary-school classes. This dilutes science education and misrepresents superstition as knowledge. whyevolutionistrue.com/2026/03/27/ind…

@Steve_Sailer @herandrews Literally it’s just this. There’s more fun things available for us to spend money on, mostly in pursuit of looking cute. What even is there for men to spend their money on??

Settle a debate for me. Are women slower to pay off their student loans because they’re - out of the workforce having kids - working in fields eligible for student loan forgiveness (e.g. nonprofits, helping professions) What explains the huge gap? Obviously both are a factor.
The Missing Data Depot@data_depot

From a 2023 NYT article entitled, "America’s Student Loans Were Never Going to be Repaid." "Male, white & Asian borrowers made progress on their loans between 2009 and 2022. Female, Black & Latino borrowers had increasing balances until the repayment pause came into effect."

@herandrews women generally have more consumer spending, no? I'd like to see cross-tabs on married vs single women here, within each demographic, and women split by race.

Atheism Plus was dead on arrival, as it was mercilessly mocked from the start. The first Atheism Plus account on then Twitter was a ruthless parody of it, so someone has to start a "real" Atheism Plus account instead. That one, unfortunately, also turned out to be a parody just playing a longer game. I know this, because I was the one who ran the second account.

People should give Conor their own experiences. For me: -Public gatherings were widely banned, but then abruptly encouraged in many quarters because “racism” was a public health crisis. -Masks were good, then pointless, then good again. In the very earliest days, I saw it earnestly argued that officials should lie about masks’ effectiveness to prevent a shortage so that hospitals could have them. -Officials coining new names for the different variants, thereby reducing legibility to the public, because they thought it was racist for ten to be named after places. -As wascovered extensively by @aaronsibarium, Covid treatments, including vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, were allocated on the basis of race rather than risk factors in several states. -There was aggressive censorship of all kinds of COVID topics, carried out by private actors but encouraged by public ones. Initially, it was claims the virus came from a lab, but it later included arguments about the vaccine’s effectiveness, potential alternative treatments, etc. -Pfizer very obviously shut down its vaccine trial to delay any result past Election Day 2020, a politically motivated action that faced zero pushback from public health officials at the time or since. -Ridiculous health theater like forcing masking as you entered a restaurant, then un-masking as you sat down, made the entire affair feel like health theater for the neurotic instead of a serious effort to protect the public.
Conor Friedersdorf@conor64

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

TV loves loudly blacking-up hobbits & elves & Hermione & Snape so wokes can claim to not notice—“Hogwarts has always been diverse, & ofc blacks can be nerds”—& bait outrage they get free coverage sputtering at. But Simpsons were obviously “high yellow” blacks & nobody goes there.

@0x49fa98 If a woman has sex with a man, and he chokes her, and then she has sex with him 3 more times, she consented to the latter three times, to the degree that the word has any meaning. Could be different guys, but if she's sleeping with 4 guys in a month that do that she has a type.

Female slogans *are* semantic drift: what matters to them is the social-relational-emotional connotation of the buzzwords they use, not anything to do with actual meaning (this obviously also affects low-T men—old, fat, gay, wimpy, etc); thus the changed uses of these unchanged words transparently maps how “feminism” changed from high modernist socialism to stale primitivist moralism. Examples: “The personal is political”: originally meant “women’s domestic work should be depersonalized into policy bc it’s all structural man,” but now means “erm we’re personalizing that aspect of your private life now” “Emotional labor”: originally meant “women’s paid work like waitressing often has an emotional cost bc they have to manage their own feelies,” but now means “women’s leisure activities like gossip have an emotional value bc they often manipulate other people’s feelies” “Well behaved women rarely make history”: originally meant “women who capably manage domestic affairs intuitively don’t show up loudly much in standard histories,” but now means “teacher said we should rebelliously mouth regime slogans to show up loudly in standard histories” “Gaslighting”: originally meant “women are bad at individually propositionally holding frame, so individual men can privately tell pointless object-level lies to destabilize their sense of self” but now means “women are collectively emotionally holding frame by publicly reframing this object-level disagreement as a pretextual attempt by their collective enemies at personally destabilizing them” “Be the change you wish to see in the world”: originally meant “grow up & clean your own room or tend your own garden instead of whining that big mom should change the rules for you,” but now means “dear kids please childishly whine for me (big mom) to change the rules for you in xyz ways now” “Witch hunt”: MeToo girls decided that feminism says witches are actually good (because they’re women accused of misbehavior), & everyone called MeToo a witch hunt, so they decided that witch hunts are actually good (because it superficially sounds like that means witches are doing the hunting); note that eg in Salem it was the ingroup of desirable girls who accused others of being witches & MeToo-ishly pressured guys to punish them “Intersectionality”: originally meant “allegedly this employer discriminated against neither blacks overall nor women overall but rather just specifically black women,” but now means “we will yes-and every claim of oppression, whether from blacks or women” “Holding space”: originally meant “I as an individual midwife or whatever am a spokesperson for that individual incapacitated woman’s interests, & I’m willing to be a nuisance to norms to make sure her wishes are honored,” but now means “we as collective normies are vaguely claiming to speak on behalf of collective norms” “Toxic masculinity”: originally meant “erm incels are harmed by demanding patriarchal norms & would thus ostensibly benefit from supporting feminization,” but now means “yuck ostensible incels are likely totally toxic to women so we should forcibly feminize them” “Empowered women empower women”: originally meant “women should favor women,” but now is excuse for women to trash each other by claiming “erm comrade you aren’t favoring women enough” “Self care”: originally meant “people in conditions of dependence taking on some degree of independence to control their care or at least maintain their dignity,” but now means “time to take some time off from being independent so I can be shamelessly cared for” “Safe space”: originally meant “experimental dissident privacy,” but now means “mainstream sloganeering censorship” Etc etc etc Many of these origin stories are self-serving: eg even though safe space really did mean “this is an atypical space for an as-yet marginal cult to try out weird args $ & be protected from mainstream discipline” before it meant “every space is officially mandating these smothering stale slogans,” it would’ve been at least as smothering to be in a 1970s “safe space” of extremist true believers as in a Peak Woke mandatory “safe space” of scared or bored normies. Likewise many of the old-school feminists were worse than modern woke ones, because they wanted state programs backing up their plans rather than just moralist screeching. But it’s undeniable that feminization corresponds particularly well with transparently changing the meaning of the same words, rather than changing the words themselves. eg how they refashioned “violence” into “everything but real violence” now that real violence doesn’t really affect women anymore.
