That is some amazing color work. This is one of those illustrations where I'd love to know all the technical/process details that went into creating that exact not too rough or messy, but also not too clean and smooth, gouache-like feel. That's my kind of coloring.

@Birdsbirdbird @davepl1968 @Autistic_Lauren Thanks. And yeah, seems obvious in retrospect. It's also a win for autism, collective punishment is NOT cool. I also really wish people would just say exactly what they mean and cut out all the stupid guessing games, so if those two points put me on the spectrum, so be it.

Collective punishment in schools never really made sense to me. It doesn't really encourage the "misbehaving students" to behave, it just teaches the ones who didn't do anything that even if they follow the rules, they will still get punished

@davepl1968 @Autistic_Lauren What's ASD mean? I was definitely always enraged by the injustice of collective punishment in school, so if that indicates whatever ASD is, then I gots the ASD bad.

@Autistic_Lauren I assume you mean when the real perpetrator is not known. Collective *punishment* only works to get a response based on peer pressure. If you have ASD, you might be somewhat "immune" to it, and enraged by the injustice of it.

@emeraldgem777 @Autistic_Lauren Exactly. The "good" kids are usually the one with the LEAST social sway, not the most. It's like expecting mice to police cats.

@Autistic_Lauren It’s supposed to encourage well behaved kids to hassle the trouble makers into behaving or some shit, but most children are too individualistic to be bothered to do that. Plus, if a well behaved kid is also a bullied kid, and a trouble maker is a popular kid…

@w3woody @financedystop Not big on wireless functionality in general, but having to connect to a separate server to control the thing in your own house? NOPE, deal breaker. I do not want that additional layer of potential failure points, fully local direct connections or no wireless at all, I say.

@financedystop And then the company that makes the dimmers which are controlled *by a remote server via the Internet* goes out of business--and the owner of the house can no longer turn on or off his lights.

@financedystop So... What if you absolutely DO NOT want to control your home's lighting with anything wireless. Does such a panel still provide any benefits? My experience with wireless control and "smart" systems in general has never been positive.

@shagbark_hick This map seems to me like it's basically just density of business in general. If not just plain population density period. As a blue boondocks resident, I'd quite frankly rather have more breezewoods nearby than have to drive two hours to buy more than basic grocery type stuff.

If you're an American who really can't stand the sprawly strip mall "Breezewood" type areas, this is a very handy map. It shows distance from a Starbuck's on a gradient. And you can bet that in the blue / white zones of the map, the "Breezewood monoculture" ain't there.

@AMasduu @ShitpostRock Call me crazy, but I both want advanced graphics AND not-realistic visuals at the same time. My ideal game visuals would be max technical fanciness applied to highly stylized art direction. Obviously, modern gaming is something I have to enjoy in spite of visuals, not for them.

Graphics may have peaked. But now the industry needs to relearn what art is and merge the two. All these companies see is "realistic" so they take away the art aspect because it apparently clashes with realism. How far from the truth that is. People yearn for realistic + artistic games. Just because a game has better graphics does NOT mean it must comply with realistic physics, bodies, gravity, textures, etc etc.

I agree that LoD pop-in is indeed still an issue and it needs to be completely imperceptible before graphics are "good enough." And I agree that yeah, the average rock and prop and even character already has all the polygons it needs at close viewing distances. At most, we only need more polygons to fix obvious LoD swaps, sometimes stuff goes low poly when it's still close enough to make a difference. If that's necessary for performance, then we need to push more polygons. But I also believe that fully raytraced lighting truly does make games look much better, I've actually felt that lighting is the single weakest link in game visuals since the third 3d generation for that matter. Possibly even the second generation. So full raytraced lighting, with a high enough sample rate to minimize visible sample noise, without cutting back draw distances or being locked to a low framerate or other costs, is another thing I think we need before graphics are good enough. Whether that comes from better hardware or more efficient software, both are fine, but either way, until we get there somehow, there are still needed graphical improvements.

@ShitpostRock the only future improvement games can make is render distance and scale, recently ghost of yotei was mindblowing to me with the render distance it allowed and how crisp everything stayed but stop adding 100000 more polygons to a rock please

@ShitpostRock Until everything casts every dynamic shadow necessary, in all possible lighting situations, and all lighting bounces too, graphics aren't good enough. I'm tired of random shadowless furniture and flashlights where the light doesn't bounce off the wall, it looks super wrong.

I think it's connected to how the series creature design hates fur coats too. Anything fuzzy or fluffy is not allowed, period. Even smooth textures are to be avoided. Which I believe is itself a part the larger obsession virtually all fantasy creature designers inexplicably have for the most leathery and/or wrinkly skin textures they can possibly justify at every single opportunity for some reason. So the TRUE mystery is why all "realistic" and/or "serious" creature designers, from film to video games, love leathery/wrinkly skin textures so much. It clearly isn't due to realism, as real life is clearly full of animals covered in fur or feathers or even really smooth scales, without a leathery surface or wrinkle to be seen. So that means it's a creative preference, but for what reason I can't fathom. I just keep hoping the design pendulum swings the other way again ASAP.

I'm unclear as to what people you're saying won't implement the solution— Us users or the people running the site? It sounds more like you're talking about us users implementing the thing, but if that's the case then it doesn't make sense that you're not saying what it is. I'd get not posting the solution if you're addressing management because they probably aren't listening anyway. But if you're saying there's a user-implementable solution, and you're saying that to us users, then why not give the people who can use the solution the solution itself while you're talking to them anyway?

@doner_kebab @AubreanReverie I mean, I get about 1000 times the engagement from replies that I get from my own posts, so yeah, I've come to the same conclusion: If you're a tiny nobody, you can only get seen by leaching off of the big boy posts people are actually looking at.

@AubreanReverie I would say that it's the replies? Like, replying to a tweet gets you the viewer of the original tweet, which would create more interaction with your account, which means more visibility and so on because the algorythm will make it easier

@vhsbetamax219 @Crawbaddy @dystopiangf Very true. Just once, I'd like to see a proponent of getting off the net for more face-to-face interaction get directly asked what weird outliers are supposed to do. Because us trying to talk about sports or other generic mainstream stuff sure isn't gonna be fun for either side.

People always doom when they realize that generative AI is going to ruin the credibility of digital media, but it’s actually very hopeful imo. The internet devolving into a fake scammy slopfest is going to force many of us to return to analog social networks & irl experiences

@Crawbaddy @dystopiangf Plus, everybody who talks about interacting analog/face to face more, for whatever reason they promote it, forgets that some of us live in small towns. So if we're weirdos with obscure interests, the internet is literally the only practical option to interact short of moving.

@dystopiangf The assumption that people will return to analog social networks is a cope. The blackpill is that the overwhelming majority of people are going to opt for the digital slopfest. The people who choose analog socializing are going to become bored quickly.

@dystopiangf What bugs me is that he could replace himself with anything, and THAT's what he went with? Wow, a mundane human to another mundane human. How exciting. To me the point of this technology is to treat it like profile pics/avatars and replace yourself with any crazy thing.

@just4leaks2 It's a good trick as long as the "reflective" surface is pretty much flat and one elevation. Otherwise, curves or steps pretty much break the illusion, and there are more limits past that. So this by no means proves raytracing is unneeded or a waste of resources.
