Habitats for frogs, toads and newts are in decline: 50% of ponds were lost during the 20th century – and of those that remain, 80% are in a poor state. So garden ponds are crucial for helping amphibians survive - and they help all sorts of other wildlife too! #nature

Left: Steve Reed, "Nationalising water companies would cost £100 billion, we'd have to take it from the NHS and Education, and it would take years of legal wrangling" Right: Feargal Sharkey explains how to nationalise water companies without costing the taxpayer a penny

Hey Steve Reed, how can Thames Water be worth £20 billion if it's 16.8 billion in debt and falling apart? That’s like crashing a car at 200mph and then asking the dealer for the showroom price. 🚗💥 Doesn’t matter what it was worth, or how much you spend on enhancements - it doesn't stop it being a write off....

“I'm not going to focus on ideology." It would cost £100bn to nationalise water companies and the government would have to take that money from the NHS and education, Environment Secretary Steve Reed tells @krishgm

Feargal Sharkey explains that this £100bn figure everyone keeps quoting for the cost to renationalise the water industry comes from a report by the private companies! Feargal then outlines why nationalising the water industry wouldn't cost us a penny #GMB

It's time the government was honest with us on the cost of Sizewell, just months ago they scoffed at the suggestion of a £40bn+ price tag, today they reveal it's £38bn, but that's in 2024 money - it won't be built for another ten years, pushing £50bn is a realistic estimate. theguardian.com/business/2025/…

🫠 Jon Cunliffe's review into the water sector deliberately left out the option of public ownership. 💸 The only way to stop millions of pounds being siphoned off for huge CEO salaries and shareholder dividends is to end the scam of privatised water. 🤝 Public ownership now.

🤯New 'regulatory forbearance' could allow water companies to dodge fines. This water regulation is created in the interest of water companies. Their stock market value has increased since the report's release. Public ownership now! vist.ly/3ymhp

2025 is quickly becoming “The Year of the Flood” in the United States. So far, 3,358 Flash Flood Warnings have been issued, over 250 more than the next closest year to date. The US has already surpassed its annual average for flash flood reports, with more than double the typical number seen by this point in the year. The Texas floods, which have tragically claimed at least 145 lives, are now the deadliest non-tropical cyclone-related flood event in the US since 1976. Abnormally high levels of atmospheric moisture are expected to persist over the Central and Eastern US for the next two weeks, so expect more flooding.

Crazy rapid heating going on right now in the world's oceans as global sea surface temperatures continue to spike. SSTs are roughly 25 days away from their mid-year peak. Will they break 21.0°C again? The climate 8-ball says that SSTs are the canary in the ... oh, never mind.
