I just watched Gaucho’s clip talking about his appointment to the board, and I definitely don’t have a problem with him or what he said. I have been a medical superintendent and secretary of a hospital board, and it’s true the constitution of a hospital board is, in fact, less than 30% made of medics. Different stakeholders, especially from the community, constitute a large part of the board. In the case of where I used to work, the chief and a representative of CHVs were some of the community members who were part of the board. I think the only problem that Kenyans have with Gaucho’s appointment is the fact that this was a political move (reward) to a political goon, devoid of the real objectivity of the existing statutes and needs of how healthcare institutions should be run. Politicians must learn to separate politics and sensitive issues such as healthcare. If you want to reward Gaucho, give him a goonship political office and let real stakeholders of the hospital take those board positions. It can be a mama mboga who supplies food to the hospital, a boda boda guy in Kayole, a chief, or a village elder, etc. Most hospitals collapse because of politics and lack of objectivity at the board level, and it doesn’t help anything appointing a radical political goon who definitely won’t be objective in running a very important hospital like Mama Lucy. These are the dangers of electing incompetent and illiterate leadership. Mama Lucy will be reduced to broad-based vs Wantam politics, which isn’t helpful.
