Ho Chi Minh was born on 19 May 1890 in central Vietnam. He was the primary architect of the Vietnamese independence movement and served as the founder of the Indochinese Communist Party and the Viet Minh. His political development was shaped by his time spent working and studying in Europe and the Soviet Union, where he observed firsthand how the wealth of the metropole was directly extracted from the blood of the colonies. His fundamental contribution to socialist struggle was the synthesis of anti-colonial nationalism with Marxist-Leninist class politics. He argued that for the global revolution to succeed, the liberation of colonised peoples was not a secondary goal but a prerequisite. By organising the peasantry into a disciplined revolutionary force, he led the resistance that eventually defeated both French colonial rule and American military intervention.
