POSITIONALLY, Harry Potter is an alpha male. Famous in the wizarding world because of who is parents were, and star Quidditch player, which is the wizarding equivalent of being quarterback of the football team. And occasionally does other heroic things.
But TEMPERMENTALLY he's an extreme beta. He has no desire to be a leader or in charge of others and has extreme social anxiety around girls.
I think that in real life, his positional alphaness is so strong he wouldn't stay beta. But I think J.K. Rowling is trying to teach young males the lesson "don't be like Harry." Take the bull by the horns. Don't have oneitis.
