Ohio Shootout Leaves 4 Killed, Including an Officer, and 4 Officers Injured Rittman, Ohio — July 5, 2026 — One Ohio police sergeant was killed and four other law enforcement officers were injured Sunday night after responding to a reported disturbance at a residence in Rittman, according to state and local authorities. Officers were dispatched after a 911 caller reported a break-in and gunfire at the home. When officers arrived, they were met with gunfire. Sgt. Scott Ries, 54, of the Rittman Police Department, was struck and later died from his injuries. Ries had served with the department for approximately 10 years and previously worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Sugar Grove Police Department. The shooting also injured three deputies with the Medina County Sheriff's Office and one officer with the Hinckley Police Department. Two of the wounded officers were taken to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. The remaining two officers received treatment at the scene. A police K-9 was also seriously injured during the incident. Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter died at the residence. Investigators also located two deceased individuals inside the home. Federal officials identified them as the suspect's former partner and her child. Their identities have not been publicly released. Officials have not announced how the suspect died or disclosed additional details regarding the deaths of the two victims. The investigation remains ongoing. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine directed that U.S. and Ohio flags be flown at half-staff in Wayne County and at designated state facilities until sunset on the day of Sgt. Ries' funeral to honor his service.
