Om Shri Gangai Nathay Namah Due to circumstances, a fear of death began to arise within me—what is called a phobia, an unexplained fear. I had a friend who also worked in the railways. He said to me, “You are going through a Markesh phase.” I did not know what Markesh meant. When he explained its meaning, I said, “This will come to everyone.” He replied, “There are ways to overcome it in our spiritual tradition.” I asked, “What?” He said, “Chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.” I found it too ritualistic and refused and said, “I will not do this, Dubey ji—let the Markesh come.” Then he said, “You can chant the Gayatri mantra instead.” I agreed to chant Gaytri Mantra. This was in 1968, during the winter Navratri. I began disciplined chanting—morning and evening—keeping a fixed count He also instructed me to offer oblations with “swaha.” I used three to four kilos of ghee for this. He warned that if I did not offer the oblations, the practice could become intense. And it was true— without them, the cycle of 125,000 chants could not be completed. Today, I need not rise—the 125,000 chants are complete. Yet my eyes opened as always; I would rise daily and bathe in cold water, even in winter. But then meditation happened on its own; I did not even know what meditation was. In the cold, wrapped in a quilt, I remained lying there. I was living in a railway quarter during my service— it was in those days that this realization came.” “Then I saw—this body had transformed into a divine form, as if it had turned into a soft, milky light.” Earlier, before joining the railways, I had done a course as a Probationer Male Nurse in Bikaner. We were taken to post-mortems and shown the organs, so I knew what the liver was, its color, what the heart was, and what the lungs were. Then I saw—no organ was visible at all. I was amazed—where had they gone? As I focused on that light, I heard a humming, like a bee, within the abdomen. When I concentrated on it, the Gayatri Mantra was being chanted from the navel. We see with the eyes outwardly, yet this was visible within. I had chanted the Gayatri Mantra from the throat, but this was being chanted from the navel. The Gayatri Mantra flowed endlessly—like a moving cycle chain with no end. I remained absorbed in this inner experience for a long time. Suddenly, the sound of running water brought me back. When I opened my eyes, the experience was gone. After that, I closed my eyes and tried again, but nothing appeared. When word spread about what had happened to me, many people from the Pushkarna community came and asked, “How did this happen?” I replied simply, “It happened like this.” They said, “Use this as a tantric practice. People will give you a lot of money. It will benefit all of us.” At first, I did not understand why people would give money. Then a few groups came—four or five batches—and changes began within me; inner experiences started arising. So I said, “Pandit ji, this is not in my control. I cannot do this. Why should I give gold and take iron in return?” They tried their best to convince me, but when I did not agree, they finally said, “He is a Jat; he will not understand,” and left. But when God takes care of something, everything is taken care of. Then I realized it was the power of the Gayatri Mantra. As Lord Krishna says in the Gita, “Among meters, I am the Gayatri.” Its realization happened—this is the attainment of the formless, the Absolute. In our country, there are two paths of worship: one is formless (Nirguna) and the other is with form (Saguna).Those who follow the path of form (Saguna) go to Krishna temples, receive Tulsi charanamrit, and live a pure, sattvic life. Those who follow the formless (Nirguna) path chant the Divine Name. Both paths lead to liberation. But for liberation, one has to ascend—to reach the highest center of consciousness, the Sahasrara, understood it or not. Maharshi Aurobindo explained this beautifully. He said that if both realizations—form (Saguna) and formless (Nirguna)—happen in one person, then the force for which one usually has to ascend will instead descendinto the physical body. He called this terrestrial immortality. This transformation happened in me in a very simple and innocent way. I never intended for it to happen—it came on its own. So I realized the power of these mantras. Around that time, I read Swami Vivekananda, who said that one cannot walk the spiritual path without a Guru. So I accepted Nath Ji (Mahayogi Baba Shri Gangai Nath Ji Maharaj, Brahmleen) as my Guru. Earlier, I used to think that whatever we offered was what sustained him—that he had nothing of his own.
