On this day in history in 1822, Ulysses S. Grant is born. After an initial military career that was cut short by his struggle with alcoholism, Grant came close to fading into obscurity. But at the start of the Civil War, he re-enlisted, putting several victories under his belt and capturing the attention of President Lincoln who revived the rank of lieutenant general, a rank that had previously been held only by George Washington, and gave it to Grant, making him supreme commander of the Union forces.

The longest-lived person to be Vice President was John Nance Garner (1868-1967), who was 98 when he died. Garner served as Vice President from 1933 to 1941 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
