During the #HRC61 debate on the most serious human rights situations (item 4⃣ GD) today, we raised the alarm about risks of an internationalisation of conflicts in #Sudan & #SouthSudan and of a regional conflict between #Ethiopia & #Eritrea. ❝ Throughout the Horn of Africa, human rights scrutiny is vital. #News_Alert: MP Dessalegn Chanie withdraws from #Ethiopia’s 7th General Election Dr. Dessalegn Chanie, MP for #Bahir_Dar City, the capital of #Amhara region, has announced that he will not run in Ethiopia’s 7th general election, citing the absence of conditions for a “free, peaceful, and fair vote.” In a statement to his constituents and the public, he said several political parties had offered him the opportunity to run in Bahir Dar or Addis Abeba, and he had also considered an independent bid. “However, I wish to officially announce my decision not to present myself as a candidate for the upcoming 7th round of elections,” he said. Dr. Dessalegn added that remaining in parliament for another five years would not bring meaningful benefit to the people he represents. “I have come to understand that the conducive environment necessary to conduct a free, peaceful, and fair election does not exist,” he said. On 4 and 5 November 2025, we convened to commemorate two decades of protecting and promoting the work of human rights defenders (HRDs) since 2005. The two-day celebration, held in Kampala, Uganda, brought together over 200 HRDs, national, regional, and global human rights champions who reflected on our journey, honouring those we have lost and reimagining the future of human rights work. The gathering featured high-level panel and group discussions, as well as the launch of two key initiatives: the Roots of Resilience Mentorship Programme and Endowment Fund. Together, these initiatives reaffirm our unwavering commitment to empowering HRDs and form part of our forward-looking reflection. They embody our vision for the years ahead, strengthening intergenerational learning, supporting emerging HRDs, and building sustainable mechanisms to safeguard those who continue to fight for the rights of the marginalised.
