There was lot of work put into this deal post Brexit and whilst recognising and celebrating that this agreement has been reached on tuna tariffs, as the Minister of State for South Asia into 2024 I pay tribute also to both by fellow Minister and friends @ZacGoldsmith and as we can both testify, the strong advocacy of former FM of Maldives @abdulla_shahid and the former High Comissioner of Maldives to the UK 🇬🇧 @DrFarahFaizal - win for all- bring on the toasted tuna melt

For accuracy and context, it is important to note that this matter of tuna tariff was constantly raised with the United Kingdom by previous administrations as well, High Commissioner! Delighted that the UK included tuna from the Maldives when cutting tariffs on a raft of food imports to the UK. “Duty suspensions are designed to help UK and Crown Dependency (Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey) businesses remain competitive in the global marketplace. They do this by removing or reducing import duties on specific goods, normally those used in production processes, for a defined period.” gov.uk/guidance/duty-… (last updated 20th May 2026). While it is a temporary measure applied broadly to eligible imports from all countries by the UK, the real test is whether the Government can secure long-term, predictable and preferential access for Maldivian tuna products beyond this temporary relief.

I believe within a democratic political organization like the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), there shouldn't be an undebatable political matter. Here is a chronological list of MDP Chairpersons from the first national congress held in 2005 Dec, till today. 1. Mohamed Nasheed was the first elected chairperson of the MDP from 2005 to 2008. Notably, he was elected while under a prolonged house arrest and there after. He also went on to win the MDP Presidential Primary in 2008. 2. Mariya Ahmed Didi from 2008 to 2011. During her entire tenure as CP, she was a sitting MP. 3. Reeko Moosa Manik was the acting chairperson of MDP from 2011 to 2014, while being the MP of HulhuHenveiru constituency. 4. Ali Waheed from 2014 to 2016. Notably he was the only guy who did not hold another political position or not a political prisoner, during his tenure as MDP chairperson till he fled to UK. 5. Hassan Latheef was the CP from 2016 to 2022. He was elected fulltime MP from 2019 till the end of his term as CP. 6. Fayyaz Ismail served as CP from 2022 to 2023. He was elected to the CO position while serving as the Minister of Economic Development. 7. Abdul Ghafoor Moosa assumed the role of acting chairperson in 2025 while being MP, a position he still holds today. Given the history of MDP chairpersonship, I am very curious to know why you claimed "a fulltime MP cannot do CP job" and it's undebatable. The MDP’s own history directly contradicts your claim. So would you care to explain the veracity of your claim and that it is not hogwash.

Leading Maldivian newsrooms, including @AdhadhuMV, @Dhaurunews , @addulive , and @IndependentMV , have suspended publication in a coordinated blackout to protest the escalating assault by the government on press freedom in the Maldives. This extraordinary protest follows the arbitrary jailing of Adhadhu journalists @MohamedShahzan and @MrLeevaaan, sweeping criminal gag orders, a raid on the Adhadhu newsroom, and the arrest of pro-democracy activists including @lucasjalyl, @mohamedshamin10, and Mushafau for standing up for media freedom. I call for the immediate release of the journalists imprisoned simply for doing their jobs, and of all peaceful protesters arrested while defending press freedom and exercising their democratic rights. A free press is the first line of defence of any democracy. In the Maldives, that line is currently under sustained attack. #NoosverikanJalah

Also if there are issues you want raised at council, send them to me. I’ll be putting items on the agenda, and I want it to reflect what we are actually dealing with daily. If there has been wrongdoing before us, it won’t be ignored!. As a people's representstive, I’ll make sure it’s taken where it needs to go.

First sitting of the council and I felt the need to say it straight, The people of this city didn’t elect us just to sit here and continue as usual. There are real questions over the last council, and we were given a mandate to look into it. I raised the issue of the land and assets list that was published. I’ve formally requested a full breakdown, ALL land under council rented out and not, all assets, all details. The mayor has assured me this will be shared & the council under him will adhere to full transparency, thank you mayor @adamazim for the commitment I’ll be following up at the next sitting.And I intend to keep pushing. Whatever comes out of this, I’ll be sharing it with everyone.

.@CorrectionsMv is denying Leevan his medication, blocking funds from his family & holding back his clothes. they moved him to solitary confinement for unknown reasons and didn’t even tell his lawyers why. where the hell is @hrcmv while all of this is going on? is HRCM’s mandate only limited to protecting the “aburufulhu” of first family?

My brother Leevan was jailed for doing his job, and now he is being subjected to cruel, unsanitary conditions. Prison authorities have denied him his medication, blocked family funds, and held back his clothes. This isn't just detention, it's targeted persecution.

This is outrageous. And at a time when many are accusing the government of playing chance with Maldivians’ lives. Leevan should not have been detained in the first place. He needs to be given access to medical care right away.

I reiterate my call for the immediate release of the detained journalists in Maldives! Reports that @MrLeevaaan is being denied medical care and held in solitary confinement are deeply alarming. The situation is worsening. The authorities are responsible for his safety and wellbeing and must ensure he receives urgent medical attention without delay.

No, this is false. @MickailNaseem engaged with members in over 100 islands during the local council elections alone. Since then, he has visited islands in AA, Adh, R, B, F, Dh & Malé. This is the result of those consultations/conversations with MDP members across the country.
