Egypt accused of bribing Ethiopian officials to sabotage dam project, report claims
A report by a #Turkish-based think tank has accused #Egypt of bribing some of the #Ethiopian officials and politicians to sabotage the dam project on the Nile river, which Egypt fears would threaten its water security and regional influence.
The report, which was published in November 2019 by the Egyptian Institute for Political and Strategic Studies, claims that Egypt has paid millions of dollars to some of the members of the Ethiopian parliament, the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Negotiation Committee, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to oppose the dam and to incite public protests against it. The report also alleges that Egypt has funded some of the Ethiopian opposition groups and media outlets to spread propaganda and misinformation about the dam.
The report does not provide the exact amount or the names of the bribed officials and politicians, but it cites some sources and documents that support its claims. For example, the report refers to a leaked audio recording of a phone conversation between an Egyptian intelligence officer and an Ethiopian politician, in which the former offers the latter $500,000 to join the anti-dam campaign. The report also mentions a letter from the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, in which the embassy promises to donate $10 million to the church if it issues a statement against the dam.
The report suggests that the motive behind Egypt's bribery attempts is to weaken Ethiopia's position and to pressure it to accept Egypt's demands on the dam's operation and filling. The report also argues that Egypt's bribery strategy is part of a broader plan to destabilize Ethiopia and to prevent it from becoming a regional power and a competitor to Egypt.
The report's credibility and accuracy have been questioned by Egyptian observers, who have pointed out some of its flaws and biases. For instance, the report relies on anonymous sources and unverified documents, and it does not provide any concrete evidence or corroboration for its allegations.

Though it may be hard to tell the exact reason for @JosepBorrellF inherent bias against Ethiopia, one thing is sure: he has been consciously ignoring Ethiopia's confidence-building measures and other significant signs of progress on the ground. #DisarmTPLF #TPLFisTheCause
