If you matched, congratulations. Now, DO NOT USE your home address and personal number for anything license/provider number related. Use your hospital’s, this will be public info. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

Long rant about the transition from med school to intern year: Most of you got your last loan disbursement a couple months ago, you’re waiting to find out where you’re moving, and the moment you find out where you’re matched, you’re going to be inundated with all sorts of information, financial, and otherwise. It’s going to be okay. 😊 Financial information includes compensation, rules for paid time off, sick days, your start date, including orientation week. Employee benefits information will be supplied at some point, sooner than later hopefully. that information includes your health insurance options, associated health savings accounts, or flexible spending accounts, if applicable, retirement account information, including whether or not your employer will match a percentage of your salary into your account if you also contribute. You’ll have to stretch whatever savings you can and then fill in the rest with either help from others or in many cases taking out additional loans through residency relocation loans or credit cards. Some credit cards offer a 0% interest for 12 months, that’s a great option if you can make a plan to pay it off within a year. The main key to figuring out money between now and the end of July is to write out all of your expenses, every single one. Not just moving truck and apartment deposit, which of course are really big. But just living. Living is expensive and it’s important to try to estimate what it’s gonna cost you to live between now and when you start getting paid so that you can prepare as well as possible with either savings or debt options. Decisions about your federal student loans do not have to begin to be made until after you graduate, and really after your school has updated your status with the national registry as not “in school”. It is after that point that you can consider doing a federal loan consolidation application to get PSLF qualifying payment started as early as August. (studentaid.gov login) That application will allow you to also choose one of the income, driven repayment plans, including the new modified REPAYE. I venture to say the majority of people should seriously consider that option. You get a measure of interest reductions, as well as the choice of filing your taxes separately, assuming you are married, to keep the payment as low as possible. If you don’t think you’ll go for PSLF, you don’t have to feel compelled to do a loan consolidation, instead, you can just wait until the early fall to pick an income driven repayment plan, again, REPAYE, through your loan servicer. And then after six months from graduation, your payments will begin. This, of course is assuming that the payment pause will, in fact end this summer. Nobody has any idea about that. Any private loans need to be factored in as a monthly expense. It would be good to revisit how you plan to pay these off, be it in a couple of years, or really stretched out to several years. The important thing is to put debt management on auto pilot so that you can live, have what you need, and be able to focus on your training. Make it your aim, fast or slow, to build up three months worth of expenses. This will be your emergency fund. Seriously, consider disability insurance, - message me if you’d like a recommendation. Investing (403(b) thru work or Roth) is important, but not urgent. If all the above are taken care of, aim to match employer contributions into the 403(b) retirement account, and if that is not offered, you can put in up to $6500 per year into a Roth IRA. Everything will be okay. 😊 More to come later. Do you like or hate this style of writing here?
