Erehwon by Samuel Butler, the inspiration for the Butlerian Jihad in Dune. To destroy all thinking machines as a way to resolve the current crisis with AI.

@ai_sentience Maybe they sent a Terminator back in time to give him the cyanide poisoned apple. There's also a theory that he didn't poison himself, that he accidentally got cyanide on it.
English

"...it seems probable that once the machine thinking method had started, it would not take long to outstrip our feeble powers. There would be no question of the machines dying, and they would be able to converse with each other to sharpen their wits. At some stage therefore we should have to expect the machines to take control, in the way that is mentioned in Samuel Butler’s ‘Erewhon’." - (Turing) Intelligent Machinery, A Heritical Theory

Is that an opinion, or are you claiming to see the future? It's a serious question, as so many talk as if they can see it.
But can you see what new developments there will be in AI next week? On Monday?
I maintain no one can see the future, that we are all guessing, including the doomers. But we don't like guessing when we get on a plane, we expect the engineers to have taken the guesswork out of it.
The real issue the doomers have is the "safety first" doctrine has been tossed out the window. As the song went, we seem to be "living on the razor's edge, trying to touch the sun".
English

@ai_sentience Very good. It shows that Samuel Butler's ideas have been taken seriously for a long time.
It seems surprising that he was so ignored when ChatGPT came along. But there are a lot of Butlerians on X.
He also predicted that they would talk to us and each other.

@peterwildeford It reminds me of this scene where Gator tries to write a firewall to keep out the Cylons.
Spoiler, they find out later the Cylons did get through.

Claude Mythos alone is finding more vulnerabilities than were found from all sources combined in prior years 👀

Anthropic@AnthropicAI
Patching these vulnerabilities will make us safer. But the software industry will need to adapt to the volume of vulnerabilities that models like Claude Mythos Preview will be able to find. We discuss this in our initial update on Project Glasswing: anthropic.com/research/glass…

@gc22gc @JOEBOTxyz It also sounds like humans sitting at a computer, posting on social media, will also be replaced by AI.
They are called bots, and they are passing any test we give them.

English

ALLEN: The Great Demoralization.
Students and workers are being told their jobs are going to disappear.
Mustafa Suleyman at Microsoft says within 18 months, jobs that require someone to sit at a computer could be replaceable by AI.
BANNON: Microsoft sells software to ppl who sit at computers.
English

@ai_sentience No, that would be interesting. I could look it up, but I still like conversing with humans. While there are still some on X.

Novel writing predictions from 1984 coming true. The others seem to be on the verge. Perhaps an AI society.
“Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”
― George Orwell, 1984
“Big Brother is Watching You.”
― George Orwell, 1984
“He was a lonely ghost uttering a truth that nobody would ever hear.”
― George Orwell, 1984
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
― George Orwell, 1984

@VraserX You can't say *if* you slow biological aging, then say *when* it happens, what will we do with them.
Pick one.
They are either all hypotheticals, you are psychic and can see this happening, or it's wishful thinking.
English

@rand_longevity You mean *if* nobody dies. Unless you are a psychic, you don't know what will happen.
English

@MarcosArrut Why not 400? If we are wishing, why not wish for more?
Where would human living to 300 live with kids being born? What would they eat?
You need a lot more wishes.
