@michabdelmalek @SeeFisch Completely agree that confounders (electrolytes, toxins, etc) need to be ruled out before considering brain death. Once ruled out, I agree with that an apnea test is sufficient confirmatory test, but false positive tests have been reported supporting use of additional testing.

@SeeFisch That’s a blunt way and mildly incorrect way to put it. You need to rule out confounding etiologies, and you might need a neurologist for that. Apnea tests are not always possible (COPD much?). Additionally, local, regional or national guidelines could demand additional tests.

@marklewismd Scrubs is possibly the most relatable medical series. Many times I have gotten better advice from Dr. Cox than my own attendings.
