This miniature ecosystem has been thriving in an almost completely isolated state for more than 60 years. It has been watered just once in that time... The considered as the oldest one grown by David Latimer of England, started in 1960, when he planted a single tradescantia cutting inside, and last opened in 1972, when he added a bit of water, then sealed again, never to be reopened. That means it has been growing inside its bottle with no additional air, water or fertilizer for 47 years. The same photo has been circulating on the Internet for at least a decade. David has certainly aged since then, but the appearance of the terrarium probably hasn’t changed. The original single spiderwort plant has grown and multiplied, putting out seedlings. As it has access to light, it continues to photosynthesize. The water builds up on the inside of the bottle and then rains back down on the plants in a miniature version of the water cycle.
