@CharIieBennett @marknicols If St Maximin is so great, how come no “top club” ever wanted him? Totally overrated. As for Barnes, what rubbish. He scores goals. As for the assists, seeing as we haven’t had a proper striker to assist this season, that’s not really a surprise, is it?

Newcastle fought relegation with Allan Saint-Maximin, Miggy Almiron and Callum Wilson up front. That forward line is better than what Newcastle have here. #NUFC

@marknicols @cjhhhh21 1 disappointing season since he’s been in charge, which also happens to include CL last 16 and LC semi final.

If Howe is to stay, the only way he gets people back onside is if he makes wholesale changes to the team, setup and tactics next year, get rid of the shite players no matter what it takes, move to a more passing/possession style, fixes the huge gaps in midfield etc, can he do it?

Dale Vince is right on this one. "Let's keep the boilers we have and buy the bombs we need." It's £2.7bn. A small start. But a start.

@lakedistrictnpa hello. Saw 6 or 7 quad bikes go up and down Hallin Fell yesterday afternoon, around 1:45-2pm. Unfortunately was not close enough to get any information or images of them. What’s the best thing to do in that situation?

@audibleuk hi. Your contact options are useless!!! In sales the “nonfiction” category is a mess- most recently, 22 pages of it. No interest in conspiracy theory rubbish, or how to become a millionaire in 90 minutes. Please create more categories! Eg history, politics, sport etc

Almost 90% Renewables, exporting 4GW and negative wholesale prices. Fossil fuel funded media and lobbyists spent years tell us all this was impossible.

Do we have first power at Dogger Bank B? According to the balancing data we have 26MW of output today at Dogger Bank B, which will eventually have an installed capacity of 1.2GW. This also implies two (out of 95) of the 13 MW Haliade-X wind turbines have been installed in recent weeks. The data first appears on the morning of March 11th with 13MW of reported output, which also aligns with a single turbine being installed at the time. The latest REMIT data lists an installed capacity of 39MW, which implies 3 turbines have been installed so far. I'll be keeping an eye on this to see how things progress…

@BBCWorldatOne a runner is also perfectly capable of knocking over a pedestrian who isn’t paying attention. Perhaps runners should be exiled from the pavement, too? Or perhaps everyone should be prudent, more aware of their surroundings and take personal responsibility.

The Economist, in its “fighting back the tears” obituary for Khamenei, salivates with true depravity over Trump’s future death in grisly, if ecstatic, terms: “...when Mr. Trump’s body was ashes, eaten by worms and ants.” It makes the Washington Post and its infamous “Austere Islamic Scholar” obituary for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi seem very quaint indeed. But I read the whole thing so you don’t have to. The key takeaways: 1. The USA is the Great Satan—no scare quotes. 2. For readers who don’t know what “Israel” is, the Economist helpfully translates it in parentheses as “the little Satan.” 3. Khamenei, otherwise known as “God’s Dictator,” had “divine right on his side” and had “countless reasons to hate the West,” which is an America-led “phalanx of morally corrupt countries.” 4. Khamenei was a sainted and humble man, dragged to power against his will, selfless and “heroically flexible” and unassailable—a “humble cleric from Mashhad who inherited the earth.” 5. Honourable in life, but perfect in death: what could be sweeter than delicious martyrdom? What could be “more deserving of paradise-to-come than to drink the pure draught of a martyr’s end”?! 6. According to the Economist, “Freedom, human rights, dress codes for women” are “tiresome Western tropes.” Yes, really. 7. All his troubles were economic: he was tormented by the West and by foreign enemies. All the crimes he ordered—beatings, killings, and so on—were, naturally, merely “a response” to those Western crimes. 8. He “rules by divine authority,” and “his tongue could channel God.” 9. He was just a ”mild-mannered cleric” gazed benignly from billboards and was a great teacher of forgiveness”. We have now surely reached the apogee of the decay of the legacy media in the West. Surely it can't sink lower than this?

@marknicols CL last 16. League cup semis. Still in the FA cup. The league has been disappointing, obviously, but it’s dead common for teams that aren’t at the very top to struggle with a lot of extra fixtures in the league. Look how Man Utd are doing when they have nothing else to play for.

UK trade data for 2025 published yesterday. We now have 10 years of data since the EU ref & 5 since we left the customs union. Remember the OBR forecast Brexit would reduce UK trade by 15% (hence their forecast of a 4% hit to productivity). Let’s see how that is working out …

@marknicols You have to judge it at the end of the season, not in the heat of the moment. Obviously last night was disappointing and other results/performances haven’t been what you’d hope. But say we get to the semi of the Cl? Howe has credit in the bank. Arteta at Arsenal for 6 years.

@marknicols On top for 90% of the first half against Lpool. Really solid performance vs PSG. Villa felt like we were robbed (even if we didn’t deserve a win), we stuffed PSG. Obviously we’re not as fluent as wanted, but with game load, injuries and unbedded-in players, it’s not a shock.
