Congratulations to Andy Burnham on becoming Britain's first Prime Minister to have been named after an Elizabeth line station.

Most important priorities for the new British government should be lowering energy prices (building more energy), building more housing, and preventing the country from totally disintegrating.

@Barristerblog Why would it? Ministers sign off on these things but they don't originate them.

Presumably his miserable courts & tribunals Bill goes with him.

It has been the greatest privilege of my life, coming from humble beginnings in Tottenham, to serve in government as @Keir_Starmer’s Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister. I am immensely proud of what we achieved, in Opposition and in Government. As Foreign Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, I helped rebuild Britain’s relationships with our European allies after the catastrophic Brexit years, stood steadfastly with Ukraine in its darkest hours, championed a new partnership of equals with the Global South and was proud to play a leading role in Britain’s recognition of the State of Palestine. I worked to secure the Special Relationship with the United States in a new era and deepened our partnerships with the Gulf and India to deliver trade, growth and security for the British people. As Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, I put record investment in our courts to begin stabilising the backlog for victims left waiting too long for justice, put in changes to take our prisons back from the brink to prevent a collapse in prison capacity ever again, put massive investment in the probation service and victims and helped deliver the Hillsborough Law. I also put in place a new approach to improving the diversity of our judiciary and made the Ministry of Justice a Whitehall leader in harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence. I would have been proud to continue serving in Cabinet. But a new Prime Minister is entitled to build his own team, and I wish @AndyBurnham and the new Cabinet every success. I will continue to serve the great people of Tottenham, support this Labour government from the backbenches and do everything I can to help defeat Reform again at the next general election.

@TheHistoryOfTh2 Though that map might just be a measure of where people flee from in retirement or otherwise when rich enough. Places that get very cold seem quite prominent

A map that purports to show birthrates by State. Since we need more children to support the huge wave of old people that's coming, it would be great if more states were like the middle of the country in this respect.

@v_j_freeman New powers are pretty much always used in ways that parliament never imagined. And yet the drafting gets broader.

Numbers in temporary accommodation also ballooned as those who were already on waiting list suddenly found themselves with lots of new company. Plus Burnham’s going to devolve new powers to councils which may be used in ways which are entirely at odds with his national mission.
Joshi Herrmann@joshi

I’m staggered that Burnham has promised to end rough sleeping across the country. It was his biggest promise when he became mayor of Greater Manchester and he didn’t come close. Here are the numbers, as revealed by @ManchesterMill last month.

One only has to take a quick look at this diagram to see that Andy Burnham will not be "scrapping" the #DigitalID scheme. The new PM may postpone the implementation of the two red boxes below (the 'ID credential' & UUID) but he's already said he'll carry on with all the rest...

Don't want to sneer at the ambition here, but there's an irony in the fact that his fist big policy splash involves him essentially arguing for a blanket, top-down imposed approach to override devolved/local authority.

🚨 WATCH: Andy Burnham spoke at dawn earlier today on his pledge to end homelessness in Britain "We ran a scheme every night. 600 beds. But we were the only place doing it. It taught me the only way is to do this together"

Burnham scraps new digital ID scheme buff.ly/1btBVCS I think this headline should probably read "Burnham abandons vague and incoherent notion of what an ID scheme might look like if it was designed by people who had once been to Estonia on a stag weekend".

If you wonder why US opinion of Israel has gone down, this guy and his pals are a big part of the answer. It's not my job to see solutions, but if it were, I'd be lost. It feels grim. I hope all the peace-loving people in Israel and the Palestinian territories find a way.

There’s a tacit conspiracy to never discuss this. The Tories don’t want to admit they presided over redistribution from high earners to low earners. And Labour doesn’t want to credit the Tories with it. Right? Wrong? You decide. But it happened.
Paul Johnson@PJTheEconomist

Neither big party wants to acknowledge this. Between 2010 and 2024 share of tax paid by high earners rose sharply. Big cuts in higher and additional rate thresholds, and in pension tax relief, hit them hard. Trade offs as ever. But please let’s not pretend this didn’t happen.
