@Norgoz In Canada at least, I remember the pricing being for all games, not "could charge whatever they see what stuck". Not like today, at least. I would rent DKC 2 times and finish it. Now people play 10 years on a single game. Agree to disagree!

@Yoube_Frank It's not a 1 to 1 comparison. Publishers could charge whatever they to see what stuck. Now, most sales are digital, lowering distribution costs. People at the top screw over both gamers and studios with unhealthy directives. Both deserve a higher caliber of product and structure

Random thought: Out of all the things the gaming community gets up in arms about (often outrage over trivial issues) I still find it difficult to acknowledge that there was not more pushback against the $70 price tag in games being normalized.

@GwenpostingTTV In an era where social media is weaponized to make it seem like fascism is accepted, protests are vital. I don't understand how there's not more. I'll give boomers this, this shit wouldn't stand in their prime.

@Norgoz Those games would be 140$ now. DKC2 sold 5 million copies, DKC3, 3.5. Madden 97 1.7. DKC2 was created by 30 people and took a year to make. It's insane to believe games shouldn't cost more than they did 30 years ago. Everything else does.

@Yoube_Frank I lived through that, too. Gaming was still somewhat new and was still in the early phase of becoming more of a mainstream thing at the time. Doesn't change my opinion of the current market.

We can shit on the boomers all we want and deservedly so but one thing the other generations could learn from them is protesting.

I’d go there everyday, put a quarter in and I would play off everyone challenging me from 2pm to 5pm. When it came out on Dreamcast I bought it and I was so used to that game at that point that my friends were asking me to play one handed, which I did & still beat them.

I was working kitchen in a restaurant back then doing split shifts (10-2 & 5-9). Next to work was this old dusty arcade I’d go to between shifts and for some reason everyone was around this game. After a couple of weeks, after many quarters, nobody could beat me.

In Virtua Tennis (released on October 6, 2000 for the Dreamcast), Sega proved that "realism" doesn't have to be boring. By taking the lightning-fast arcade engine and adding a deep World Tour mode, they created what many still consider the greatest sports game ever made, a title so intuitive that anyone could pick up a controller and feel like a pro within thirty seconds. Grand Slam Intel: The Two-Button Mastery: Unlike modern tennis sims with twenty different shot modifiers, Virtua Tennis uses just two buttons: Topspin and Slice. The depth comes from your positioning and how long you hold the direction during your swing. If you're planted, you're dangerous; if you're running, you're toast. The "World Tour" Grind: This was the secret sauce of the Dreamcast port. You create a player and travel the globe, but instead of just playing matches, you compete in bizarre training mini-games, like knocking down giant bowling pins with serves or protecting a series of targets from a ball machine. The Roster of Legends: You get to play as (or against) icons like Jim Courier, Tommy Haas, and Cedric Pioline. Each has a specific "style", Courier is a baseline power hitter, while Tim Henman is the serve-and-volley king. The 4-Player Smash: This was the ultimate "party" game for the Dreamcast. With the system's four built-in controller ports, doubles matches were chaotic, high-speed affairs that usually ended in a lot of shouting and "accidental" lobs.

On the Strait of Hormuz we've gone from: 1. Don't need help 2. We need help 3. Why aren't folks helping? 4. Helps on the way 5. Not telling you who is helping 6. Helps not actually on the way but we don't need it anyway 7. We may just abandon it and leave it to everyone else

'Well actually Jon, you can just turn off and ignore DLSS5' Ok, sure, can I also turn off the massively inflated prices of PC parts caused by Nvidia fucking up the market as part of its huge AI push that's closely tied to DLSS5's AI models? Oh, so I can't just ignore it then.
