My pick to win the prologue is Sam Watson. He’s a real specialist in this type of short effort and was excellent last season. For me, he’s clearly the main favorite. Keep a close eye on Ivo Oliveira as well. He came very close to beating Sam Watson in the Romandie prologue and is perfectly suited to this kind of course. Maikel Zijlaard is another strong contender. Last season he wasn’t quite at the same level as in previous years in prologues, but he remains a very solid option. Ethan Vernon also deserves a mention. He didn’t race many time trials last season and didn’t have a prologue like this, but in the past he’s delivered excellent results in similar efforts, including victories. Lawrence Pithie is an interesting outsider. While he hasn’t stood out much in longer time trials, he usually performs very well in short efforts around the 3 km mark, which makes this course ideal for him. And of course, you can never completely rule out Jay Vine in an effort like this. #TDU #TDU2026 #TDU26 #TourDownUnder #SamWatson

Would be interesting to see what Visma decides if Vingegaard wants to ride the Giro. To maximize wins, they could send him to Giro + Vuelta to target both GCs and hunt stages in the Tour with others. That’d work results-wise, but likely not sponsor-wise.
