As a free speech watchdog Ye's new 'He!l H!tler' song being banned on all streaming platforms is an important flash point. As much as Right Wingers will warn about Cancel Culture from the Left, Antisemitic speech laws from the Right are actually further along in being an immediate threat to 1st Amendment rights in the USA. In Canada and other European countries there's already Antisemitism speech laws on the books. Digital censorship aside, Ye's new song is definitely illegal in Germany and is potentially illegal in other countries because of specific laws around "Antisemitism", a term which notoriously has a loose definition. Hate the song, Love the song be offended etc. that's kinda the point of good Art: it's thought provoking, boundary pushing, and gets people talking.  It's fascinating to see people condemn Ye's new track as if it exists in a vacuum and isn't worthy of artistic license. Art and Songs graphically depicting murder, rape and reducing women to sex objects get regular mainstream air time - but Ye's new song must be banned because it uniquely offends someone's Jewish Grandma?  This is a wild standard to impose on free expression. "But it makes Jews feel unsafe" What about NWAs "Fuck Tha Police"? Does this not make Police Officers feel unsafe? Heck, you can take the entire genre of 'gangster rap' and find song after song specifically crafted to invoke fear and intimidation into listeners. But apparently allll of that is fine unless it disturbs the historic sensibilities of someone's Bubbe? - again it's an absurd standard to impose on free expression. Artists intentionally using offensive language & shocking imagery in their art is nothing new. Making Art that upsets old people and makes them clutch their pearl necklaces is nothing new. Tyler the Creator's early career revolved entirely around being shocking & offensive. "Hail Satan" "sex drugs and rock and roll" defined an entire era of music that was shocking and offensive for its time and certainly made identifiable groups feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Also who could forget my favourite John Lennon song? These are just examples off the top of my head but there's plenty of threads to pull on here and people SHOULD pull on them because hot take: free expression is important and the right to offend and horrify people is actually where the free speech debate starts - not where it ends.
