@Red52161 That is fair. It is also stated that they replicate in the manner of the Children of Eru, so that does give perhaps a bit more agency/life to them in a sense. Yet, they are clearly commanded by the greater and more evil force of Melkor and Sauron than by their own free will.

@Yoystan While I do agree this is several bridges too far, Orcs do seem to have a little more agency than a zombie or demon. For example Shagrat and Gorbag discuss the war, complain about their bosses, and share dreams of setting up their own independent, bandit-like operation.

@AngryMeow42 It is also suggested that Elves' spirits (fëar) could leave their bodies (hröar) after undergoing exceptional physical duress. I imagine the process of becoming an Orc would constitute that.
