The Sack of Lindisfarne took place on June 8, 793 AD, when Viking raiders from present day Norway, crossed the North Sea and attacked the monastery on Holy Island off the northeast coast of England. Founded in 635 AD, by Saint Aidan, Lindisfarne was one of the most important centers of Christianity in Anglo Saxon England and was famous for its learning, religious art, and the Lindisfarne Gospels. The monastery was wealthy but largely undefended, making it an easy target for raiders seeking gold, silver, and other valuables. Many monks lost their lives or were taken captive, and sacred treasures were carried away. The attack stunned Christian Europe, with contemporary chroniclers describing it as an unimaginable disaster and a sign of divine judgment.
