@hecubian_devil We are living in the most prosperous time in history in the most or one of the most prosperous countries. Liberalism is the answer. People are spoiled and bored and think there is something better if they break the system with MAGA or progressivism/socialism. They are wrong.

@jonatanpallesen Murder is unfortunately the only reliable metric, and it’s much lower in London than all big US cities. Robbery could be higher there though, idk, but that is more difficult to compare.

People are sort of arguing about two different things. USAID cancellation was cruelly abrupt, but cancelling in general is a normal policy discussion

@ianbremmer The abruptness of the cut, stranding people, is the bad part. Cutting/funding USAID should be a normal policy debate. Abruptly closing USAID the way Elon/Trump did was cruel and likely did cause deaths. If they ramped down funding over a year or two I wouldn’t blame them.

@Noahpinion I think it’s wrong to assume 20th century communist famines are accidents. Communists wanted to break society, as in breaking a horse, whoever is left will support the state ideology. Forcing everyone into collectivized farms breaks previous classes and hierarchies

@LifesMozaic @Scarletkoito333 Trump has currently put America in a worse position with Iran than Obama did with the JCPOA and Obama did it without a wasteful and deadly war. Trump could lose a war to Iran on Hormuz Ave and his supporters would still support him.

@xwanyex MAGA policies would wreck the economy. The fortunate thing is the courts and some checks and balances have stopped it. Tariffs and deporting tens of millions of people would wreck the economy, Trump just hasn’t been able to fully enact it.

@pawel_lasek @piotor87 @kamilkazani I was considering loans as falling under “cutting rent from capital”. Without loans princes and nobility just hoard wealth, or the Gov controls it. Loans are a way to get wealth from those that have it to those who can do something with it and potentially that benefits everyone.

A big part of the growth since the renaissance era is because of finance, capital can go from owners to people that will use it (paying interest, but it’s instead of owners hoarding)

@piotor87 @kamilkazani That doesn’t sound like a strong enough argument to me. There has to be some ownership or else there is nothing to trade. Yeah there are some tradeoffs, patents are a good example of something that protects private property but reduces freedom. That seems like a minor tradeoff

@kamilkazani Can you expand? Why must only one be chosen? Isn’t capitalism about private property ownership and private finance, and the free market is about trading goods and services with little gov interference?
