Historical Anchoring: From Radical Rhythm to Pure Generative Systems Symphony for n Metronomes emerges as a direct consequence of Andreas Rau’s conceptual explorations of György Ligeti’s Poème Symphonique for 100 Metronomes (1962) and Toshi Ichiyanagi’s Music for Electric Metronome (1960). The core idea and starting point of the project rests on the metronome as a generator of a continuous pulse, reflecting the sequential logic of block creation on the blockchain. This anchoring to radical explorations of rhythm and structure has triggered Rau’s approach to developing generative systems capable of expressing this potential within a pure digital dimension. Within these newly coded architectures, the metronome becomes a living agent within a collective entanglement shaped through code and time. Rau’s work expands the legacy of these radical compositions by repositioning vibrational oscillation as a generative logic of artistic thought. The rhythmic systems he develops articulate presence and interaction without relying on codified linguistic structures. What was once a conceptual gesture rooted in analog temporality becomes, in Rau’s system, a continuous architecture of synchronization and code-based inscription. From May 19th to June 1st, my latest work, BLACKOUT, will be displayed on six massive billboards across the city of Milan. The project explores the paradoxical relationship between art, humanity, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Words will take center stage, creating a semantic short circuit. The installations will form a sprawling open-air exhibition spreading throughout the city. This project represents a significant collective effort and production challenge for my team and marks the first time I’ve used Italian text in my work.
