@PrideOfDetroit Is it possible to extend the young guys and pay an edge? Feels like a position that needs to be addressed in the draft. Brads basically said he’s taking his young core over paying vets. Sweats on a good deal for an edge, but still making around what Laporta would make

@woodwardsports Why has this become a topic, Gibbs is as close to irreplaceable as you can get, and rbs don’t make much money compared to other positions, this is the most no brainer move the lions can make

@mjb15201 @DetroitOnLion I’m also pretty sure every lions tight end is in the last year of their deal, so it’s hard to say the can bet on a whole new room next season

@mjb15201 @DetroitOnLion The rams definitely have a couple solid tight ends but none topped 500 yards this season, I don’t think it’s fair to say any of those guys are close to 90% of Laporta. Plus this is one example it doesn’t mean that any team can reshape a low valued position group in 1-2 seasons

I think this is fair point, but I'm curious which extensions you weren't in favor of? Obviously, Barnes and McNeill haven't held up well for different reasons. But any other ones you disagree with? Are you in favor of extending that 2023 class?
Michael Boyle@mjb15201

@DetroitOnLion I think this is the problem. BH falls in love with his players and loses sight of the Moneyball aspect of sports. You have to find value. Instead we’re left with a two tiered team. A handful of studs surrounded by journeymen on one year contracts.

@mjb15201 @DetroitOnLion The lions are also a team that took Eric Ebron and Brandon pettigrew in the first. I just don’t think you can easily find even 90% of Sam Laporta, I think that’s discrediting the player he is, and the draft process in general

@mjb15201 @DetroitOnLion I think this is making sound way to easy to find a solid TE. Hockenson wasn’t as good as Laporta and he was a top 10 pick in the draft. Michael Mayer was taken one pick after Laporta and has done almost nothing for the raiders, even before bowers got there

@DLFPtweets You can try and explain this to most lions fans a million times and they still won’t understand. They are too focused on last season and forgetting that this same core got to the nfc championship and a number 1 seed. Those rosters had plenty of holes as well, just need some luck

Jahmyr Gibbs & Jack Campbell are both poised to reset the RB and LB markets. I expect both to hit $20M+ per year. Sam LaPorta & Brian Branch will get paid too once they return to form, and I believe they will. That’s why Brad didn't go crazy in FA. He wants to draft, develop homegrown talent & pay those guys. That’s exactly what he meant by “financial constraints”, he said it today, noting the Lions knew the limits entering free agency and avoided multi-year deals to save cap space for upcoming extensions.

@TBrandon84 This is my problem with most lions fans, they complain about every signing, while having zero understanding of the salary cap and the future money from extensions in the next few years

@TBrandon84 We all know that historically, the real thing that has held back, the #lions has been their disastrous ownership specifically the #Ford family. Is anyone asking THE question? If not, let me be the first. Is Sheila tightening the purse strings?

@Night0wl58 @the_det_times @AaronWilson_NFL Yeah just like when we originally signed guys like Roy Lopez, amik, anzalone, and Kalif for 2 mill a yr and then fans freaked out when we let them walk years down the line for way more money

@the_det_times @AaronWilson_NFL I hope it’s not the case but there’s gonna be a lot of lions fans wondering why our 2 mil per year players aren’t good💀😅

@DetroitPodcast If anyone inside the lions building is dumb enough to bring news to Mike Valenti, then there really is an issue with the organization

@swarheit What wave 1 contracts would you have liked to match? I feel like hutch and Micah reset the market during the season and a lot of those early guys got overpaid bc of it. Might of missed someone tho

@Kai54016240 @fednv @Section344Lions I just dont understand why there’s so many fans acting like it’s the paper bag days bc we lost guys like Anzalone, Amik, and AQM. The only one I understand is Monty but the return was great and he obviously wanted a bigger role he was never getting behind Gibbs

@antibeggar_ @Section344Lions They all have except maybe Chicago, we lost like 5 mid tier starters and everyone’s freaking out. That’s the point of the salary cap and it happens to every good team

@Section344Lions It’s not the fact that they are being extended, it’s when it’s happening. Step outside your little Detroit bubble, if any other NFC north rival had an offseason like this, you’d be laughing at them and mocking them. You put a lot of good content out honestly, but it’s homerish.

We can differentiate on opinions on when you'd prefer each one to happen, but the idea that fans are even 1% annoyed that Brad Holmes wants to extend All-Pros Laporta, Gibbs, Branch & Campbell is outwardly hilarious to me.

@LionsSyndicate @spotrac I rlly don’t understand the “his guys” narrative, laportas a top tight end, any gm would pay him if it fits within the budget

Everyone blown away by the prospect of Sam Laporta getting traded, here is his market value according to @spotrac. Holmes traded TJ in a CONTRACT YEAR. I understand that he drafted Sam, he didn’t draft TJ. So he Just may pay him. He’s done that with his guys up til this point!
