This solo indie dev is shamelessly ripping off this tweet format to show you his (my) low-scope new project - Do stylish platforming to a time limit - Get points to please your audience - Rank up based on your performance It's called Starlight Circus. Would you play it?

@ZayneDoesThings Biz wise I'm not really doing much though personally, currently. Not actively marketing it, it's too small and too niche.

Right. Business plan. What we're going to do is revisit the 80's UK "bedroom coding" budget experience from the Spectrum etc and focus on score attack simple arcade games basically designed for the Steam Deck (but that work on everything). And actually going to do it, this time.

Game idea Fear And Loathing In The Public Domain A low quality Souls-like made of free CC0 3D assets that don't make any sense because various planes of reality have smashed together and you're some dude named Jeff.

Game idea Small short side-quest checklist stuff in a little self-contained open world, except the temperature is constantly rising until you're basically Anakin in episode 3. This is a tweet about the British weather.

Help, I'm in a passport border patrol queue with Americans who keep saying "low key" and "bruh". I didn't realise they really spoke like this. Help. I can feel my brain rotting.

Flying back from Sweden via Copenhagen. Heart wrenching leaving behind my brand new beloved wife so I can go see a neurologist. Pulled away by my brain to the hellish land of heat and misery. Wonderful.

The music in the NES version of TMNT is one of the best parts of the game. This little ~15-second earworm from the overworld has been stuck in my head for over 30 years. #RetroGaming

On a plane flying back to the UK. The heat is ramping up. I am flying into the mouth of hell. I mean I was anyway because my flight lands in Manchester but it's even worse now.

YouTube is so psychologically negative, man. A video gets 1200 views in like a day and it's all grey arrows and misery because it's not 65k views in ten minutes.

@TimegazerS45231 That 'science' I personally view more as a series of techniques, like storytelling formats in writing or brush strokes in painting. It's a little more technical because obviously nobody ever patented "the hero's journey", so I definitely get your point.

@ZayneDoesThings However, it is also an art form, because there are personal elements in non-gacha/casino/etc. games that exist merely for the author to express something. The part that makes the game fun to play is the science. The part that makes you think about it later is the art form. (2/2)

Please remember game design is an art form, not a science. There is no singular "right way" to do things. I recommend picking apart as many games as you can like a "media literacy" analysis. Look at the 'why' and the 'how', find the intent and how it was/wasn't achieved.

Hello, actual game designers. Wannabe game designer, here. How do I pursue an actual understanding of game design? How do I learn more for real? The last thing on EARTH I want to do is form gamer opinions, and I'm super interested in design. Where do I start? 🩷
