Prosecutors say he gave his biological daughter Makayla Renee Settles alcohol in July 2025 before having sex with her. Makayla tragically took her own life five months later in December 2025. Texts have now emerged in the case. Chavez admitted abusing his position of trust. The shockingly light maximum sentence has sparked major public outrage. People are also asking why this wasn't considered rape: Prosecutors in Ventura County spent months reviewing the case with a team of top sexual assault attorneys. They had a rape kit that confirmed Chavez’s DNA, detailed statements from Makayla, and evidence of alcohol being supplied by her father. Brown was sentenced to 120 days... but he was released early, and only served 60. He was out in March.
