For those reading too much into official statements in Bangladesh about the 1971 Liberation War, here is an American perspective. Every Dec 7 we remember Pearl Harbor and decry the actions of the wartime Japanese leadership. On April 19 we root for the underdog Minutemen fighting the Redcoats. And as Northerners, we celebrate the defeat of the Confederacy at Gettysburg every July 1-3. There is a place for history and remembrance. But while the past informs the present, it does not define it. This is particularly the case for those who do not have a lived experience of historical events. There is no reason that Bangladesh and Pakistan cannot enjoy a strong, mutually beneficial relationship in 2026. The reality of 1971 cannot be erased but it can be overcome. This will take a commitment from both sides.
