As we enter Day 17 of Iran’s internet blackout, let’s answer one of the FAQs. Q: Why does the government say the shutdown is for “security reasons”? A: In countries where governments have the trust of their people, authorities can issue regulations or emergency guidance, and citizens follow them. There’s no need to shut down the entire internet. But when a government disconnects 90 million people from the internet to maintain control, that’s not security. That’s fear of its own population. And that’s what dictatorship looks like. #DigitalBlackOutIran‌
