Not a shock result, not a cruel one-off, but a pattern of failure that has hardened into identity. This isn't bad luck, it's not referees, it's not a single missed penalty. It's generational decay. There are always excuses close at hand. A red card, a squandered chance, a shootout that slipped away. That's football in isolation. Over time, it becomes something else. It becomes a culture that accepts near misses as mitigation, that confuses effort with excellence, that hides behind talk of spirit while standards collapse. Those in charge speak of patience and progress. They cling to their positions while the badge loses its meaning. No accountability, no urgency, no sense of the weight they are meant to carry. Italy used to set the terms; now, they react to failure and call it misfortune. Yes, there are promising youngsters, yes, there are plans on paper, yes, there are cranes hovering over stadiums. None of it matters when the national side cannot reach the game’s grandest stage, an expanded stage, manipulated by FIFA, to avoid this exact scenario.
