Duke hired Jayson Tatum in a similar role last year. Steph Curry at Davidson, Trae Young at OU as well.
Would have been smart for Kentucky to do this with John Wall, being his alma mater, helping mentor players, roster construction, & fundraising.
Wall was a superstar at UK. Could have helped with the “Cool” factor.

@gobigblue92 @kyrgaines @MrsTylerKSR Why would it not be a factor? I mean they could have done a work around, but a Nike signed player going to a rival shoe company school and having to wear their gear not the one you’re being paid by to wear their stuff. It has to be (or has been) a major factor.

Have always given props for his successes, his, but also critical of the failures….and he has several at UK.

@BBNDuckett44 @arkrazorbackx Not that he carried Cal, but the norm was different and the regret of not going to LA along with it. Then the fall of the relationship with Mitch.
If you can’t see he was totally different as were the teams after 2015, fine. But go back and look. 1 good season after that.

I still think he regretted not taking the Lakers job when he opted to sign the lifetime contract….he was never the same…then got rid of Robic….definitely not the same after that.

Conceding the silly argument that UK ran off Cal….they for sure did with Rupp. He too was a legend at UK. So it can be done and you can survive.

This conversation will never die man like can we stop with this? Calipari’s brand was not bigger than Kentucky until he got to Kentucky. UK 100% enhanced Calipari’s brand. There’s no debating that. Then, he used Kentucky to sell recruits on preparing for the league Coach Cal is a career underachiever, but he can get elite players to commit to him because he tells them to their face that he only cares about getting them to the league and making their dreams come true. It’s made him the greatest recruiter of all time, but if Anthony Davis wasn’t the best player in CBB history, he would have ZERO championships in his career. He actively insinuated that he didn’t care about winning and wanted to get kids to the NBA. He was the only coach willing to openly admit that, so players loved him and viewed him as the coach they wanna play for. These highly rated recruits care more about getting to the league than winning in college, so that sells Kentucky benefitted from Calipari, and Calipari benefitted from Kentucky. This conversation about what the “brand” was is just so dumb. Kentucky is objectively the biggest brand in college basketball as far as specific programs go. Duke is the only other program in the conversation.

@CatBagford The length of time doesn’t matter, this is the new normal and has been since Cal walked, Kentucky is just another SEC school now until proven otherwise in the NIL era (you’re correct about that part and is the reason why UK isn’t differentiated in any way any more)
