Call of Cthulhu has thrived in Japan. I think in part by focussing on more modern scenarios and CoC's ease at adapting to one-shot adventures. When I was in Japan I got to play in an adventure in which we used a gigantic telescope on an approaching astronomical object, which turned out to be Ghroth. I was pretty excited, because Ghroth is a great concept and is almost never used in America. But now I can truthfully say that in 100% of games I've played in Japan, Ghroth appeared. (Sadly we all survived. But it was kind of a presentation game on a stage with a whole audience watching. Mostly women too. I will say that my wife came along. I thought I'd see if I could make her jealous because of the cute Japanese girls who played my game, but she just laughed at me.) Japan has a great store of really creepy yokai and other entities which work great for cosmic horror as witness films like Kwaidan or Noroi The Curse. Japan is also adept at science-fiction terrors, as in Goke Body Snatcher From Hell or the H-Man. And of course science fiction and cosmic horror both fit perfectly into Lovecraft. Lovecraft bridges our worlds. Everyone from every nation understands cosmic horror and science fiction is almost as widely known.
