What something that’s completely normal in movies but would be weird and even psychotic in real life?

@Nick_Pettigrew I didn’t like this one at first, but a few days later I found I couldn’t stop looking at it and each time I noticed something different. I also like that it looks sorta animated. Not saying it’s good, but I find it a little captivating, maybe because of the light I don’t know?

Five years ago today I took the best photo I’ll probably ever take. I like good photos and have a four hour bus journey shortly so need entertaining. Feel free to reply with the best photo you ever took. Accompanying description also welcome.

@bstract_thot When I was little a favorite time was sitting with my grannie on her front porch and watching people. We would make up stories about them. I realized many years later that she was teaching me to study, empathize, sympathize, judge, wonder, write stories, and feed my imagination.

it continues to be wild to me that if the cinnamon tree didn't happen to exist there just *wouldn't be cinnamon flavour* and yet you'd still have the *capacity to taste cinnamon* and there are surely thousands of flavours you could taste that just happen to not exist

The essay mentioned here--"My Family's Slave"--met widespread condemnation in the US for precisely the reason OP suggests I fear this response reflects the politically unhelpful and sadly false belief "*I'd* never own slaves, even if doing otherwise required pathbreaking effort"
michael wave@michael___wave

everyone else remembers the time someone wrote a longread about how his family had kept a woman enslaved when he was child, and the measly reparations he’d attempted in adulthood, before dying two weeks later for unrelated reasons, right?

I have a theory that people have simply forgotten why “old fashioned” things like undershirts, and (not in the winter) hats, gloves and scarves are actually USEFUL. It seems so strange that the whimsy of the trends could overcome the practicality

I too am a cat pervert. My neighbor's cat comes over daily for treats and screeches. Hands up if you are one too!

@LesleyHoenig @ask_aubry Because this is an angry man. Look at the facial expressions of the woman. She’s clearly uncomfortable. He doesn’t give a shit. He sees the cat as his property. I guess he sees her the same way

@ask_aubry We all know that cats aren't going to go out of their way to approach someone they don't like. Why deprive a cat of a human they approve of?

@Rquietlyreading Also be aware of couples fighting. Especially if the girl/woman seems to want to get away but the guy keeps following her. Go up to her and ask if she needs help. Best to ask another bystander to also standby

My teen daughter and I went on a walk tonight and she told me something that stopped my heart. I am sharing it because it reminded me how important it is to talk to our kids about being aware of their surroundings. She went to the outdoor strip mall today with a group of friends and they decided to have lunch at Panera. She said a man was standing by the door watching them while they ordered their food and then followed them around while they looked for a table. The girls mentioned briefly to each other that they felt uncomfortable, but thought maybe they were overreacting and tried to ignore him. While they were talking, an older woman doing work at another table called my daughter over saying she wanted to talk to her. The woman told her that she’d noticed the man watching them and she just wanted to make sure they didn’t go anywhere alone. My daughter thanked her and then sat down with her friends, where this man had now moved around to the barrier between their booth and the pickup counter and was staring through a crack at them. They tried to ignore him, but thankfully other ppl noticed his behavior at this point. A worker went over and asked him to leave, which he did. But they could see he was loitering right in front of the store. When they finished their lunch, they quietly went out the back and to the bookstore where they stayed until their moms came to pick them up. Anyway, even if you’ve had these conversations with your kids before, it is not overkill to have them again. And thank you to the adults who were looking out for these girls, though I do think calling security would have been appropriate.

@JueDaJones @Cupcakes_n_Rap Please inform yourself better. For your own and possible kids’ sake. Many girls get their period young, around that age. And from then on, you better fucking bet they can get pregnant. I’m not even going to address the rest. I’m wishing you more kindness to look upon the world

@Cupcakes_n_Rap Virtually no 10-12 YO can pregnant at the best of times, let alone when their brain & body is traumatised by rape; when cortisol is high even women at peak fertility who haven't been raped are unlikely to get pregnant. Now try justifying late abortions for promiscuous 30y olds.

While we are all talking about incest and the rape of little girls, I'm going to talk about another taboo: abortion late in pregnancy, or "late term abortions". 10, 11, & 12 year old girls are some of the people who sometimes need abortions later in pregnancy; can you guess why?
