To highlight the scale once again - if you look closely (top right image), you will notice two men standing. They barely surpass the height of that tiny detail in that small corner of the roof. King Hassan II didn’t just commission a monumental mosque - he intentionally used the project to revive, preserve, and modernize Morocco’s traditional crafts which were endangered in the 80’s. This project revived traditional apprenticeship chains and centuries old technical methods/knowledge. All while advancing and adapting it to modern engineering and unprecedented scales. Some also suggest he tackled rampant unemployment, while reviving domestic supply chains and industries.

Completed in 1993 as king Hassan II’s monumental gift to Casablanca. A city he thought was lacking in spiritual essence. He said, “I wish Casablanca to be endowed with a large, fine building of which it can be proud until the end of time ... I want to build this mosque on the water, because God's throne is on the water. Therefore, the faithful who go there to pray, to praise the creator on firm soil, can contemplate God's sky and ocean.” It took 6,000 traditional craftsmen 5 years to complete the Zellige tiling all over the mosque. And the effort of 35,000 men totalling 50 million hours of labour to complete the mosque. The ceiling of the great hall sits at a height of 60 meters with 40 meter high arches below. To help visualize, you can basically fit a 20 story building beneath the carved ceiling. That also means it’s tricky to notice people standing inside. If you look to the bottom left of this image, you’ll notice a man in white standing there.

An inferior species of superstition among the Moors is the repugnance they have to the killing of Storks; which act, they say, is sinful. It may be, that the regularity with which these birds utter their cries, and the motion they make with their bodies, which, in some sort, resembles that of the Mahometans when at prayer, have annexed ideas of piety to their preservation. It is also natural to suppose the lives of Storks are spared from a much more rational motive, since they destroy noxious insects, locusts, and serpents. In the first state of society, simple and innocent man imagined every thing which was forbidden, every thing injurious to order, decency, or the good of the whole, was sinful. The present Moors blindly obey the commands of their Prince, which they regard as the laws of religion. Source: The Present State of the Empire of Morocco (translated from M. Chenier)

You see those Stork nests on the green tiled roofs (bottom-left photo in previous post). Those have been there looong before colored photography. Some say they go back centuries. You can see them in this photo taken between 1913-1930. Behind the ruined ceremonial palace, we find one of the current royal palace complexes of Marrakech that continue to be in use to this day. You can still walk by this gate and take in views that haven't changed much.

Morocco lost this match because it came up against an opponent that had a solution to every problem it posed, while posing more problems than Morocco could find solutions for. Btw France didn’t give 100% either. Next best step is to go back to work and the drawing-board. Synthesize learnings. And position ourselves better for the next opportunity. Objectively, there’s levels. And that’s a good thing because it means you can climb.

Morocco lost this match because of injuries to their key players, but they still fought until the end. They gave it everything. Wishing them all the best in the future.
