People think of Baker Mayfield and they remember the Heisman Trophy, or they point to his recent gutty NFL performances and love his toughness. I think his senior year at Lake Travis gave you a glimpse of what was to come. After leading a state championship team as a junior, Lake Travis moved up to Texas 5A. Baker responded by leading the Cavaliers to a 9-2 record, a district championship, and threw just 3 interceptions all season. He wasn't the prototype, and major programs still overlooked him. Watch the film. The pocket movement. The vision downfield. The willingness to become a blocker after the throw. Those aren't highlight traits. They're winning traits. Quarterback evaluation gets consumed by arm strength, height, and testing numbers. Those matter, but they don't explain why certain quarterbacks consistently elevate teams. Winning is behavioral. It comes from disciplined decisions, competitive toughness, and a willingness to do whatever the team needs. The quarterback position isn't a throwing position. It's a command position.
