BITCOIN ORDINALS TAX FRAUD SCHEME BUSTED IN ITALY Italian investigators uncovered a €1 million Bitcoin Ordinals tax fraud scheme after tracing transactions from a single seized Ledger hardware wallet using Chainalysis Reactor. Authorities say the suspect used Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens to generate undeclared capital gains while illegally collecting public subsidies over multiple years. Investigators reconstructed what appeared to be a complex web of random Bitcoin transactions into a repeatable “inscription monetization cycle” where satoshis were sent to inscription services, turned into Ordinals assets, sold for profit, and recycled back into new inscriptions. Using common-input-ownership heuristics, investigators linked dozens of pseudonymous wallet addresses back to one controlling entity before KYC records from centralized exchanges revealed the suspect’s real-world identity. Italian authorities say the case shows that even newer Bitcoin-based asset classes like Ordinals and BRC-20s remain fully traceable on-chain despite their technical complexity.
