A couple of nights ago I heard a rattling outside my bedroom window and went out to find this scene: the resident wheatbelt stone gecko (Diplodactylus granariensis) had caught a cicada for dinner.

@ecotechnica @cicadamania It would make sense for the name to refer to Macrotristria given the characteristic red “nose” (connotations of overindulging on whiskey). Could be teneral, as suggested, but there is also an inland form of M. angularis that has pale wing membranes as described in Moulds (1990).

@cicadamania @_DrPop_ Haven't heard of this one. I'd hazard a guess it might be referring to a White Drummer. I've heard from some people who refer to a Floury Baker as a White Ghost.

@_DrPop_ @ecotechnica -- have you ever heard of a "White Whiskey". My guess is a teneral Macrotristria angularis, a Floury Baker, or a White Drummer. Someone in their 70s said they remember the name from when they were a kid.

A nest with dual occupancy 🏠 Visitor Christine Rand recently captured these images of a Little Eagle nest at Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary (QLD). If you look closely, you can also spot the (much smaller) second nest, likely belonging to a finch species. #BirdWeek 📸 C Rand/AWC

Australia is voting on its favourite sound! The case for the world's largest insect rings clear📢 The soundtrack to our Summers, up to half of the world's cicada species call Australia home! We’re *buzzing* to have contributed to vital research documenting their diversity...

Great to see a flock of Scarlet-chested Parrots feeding on green herbage in Gluepot Reserve, South Australia this past week!

🦗Listen up!🦗 In just two nights at Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary, entomologist Dr Popple & his team discovered a rhythmic call unique to the Northern Greengrocer *and* a potential new species, thanks to the area's excellent species richness. Stay tuned for more! 📸🔊L Popple/#AWC

Some will never finish the work set out to be done. Not because we didn't try but because the work is larger that any of us. Taxonomy is one such thing. #midjourney #taxonomy

Dear ecologists: how do you spell the abbreviated version of "reconnaissance"? As in when you go to scope out field sites (or whatever), but not collect data. No strong opinions here, every one looks wrong to me 🙄
