On the topic of dustbins... I grew up in Delhi. In 2008 after bombs blasted in some markets and some found in dustbins, Delhi Metro decided to ban dustbins in stations. "fair enough" I thought - cost of terrorism is this When I came to London, another city famously devasted with terror attacks in the metro, what I find is they just moved to using transparent packets as bins so it is easy to see what is inside. 🤦‍♂️ When you operate from a point of the bins being non negotiable, you find a solution without removing the bins altogether.

My Australia trip is 18-19 days long. The reaction from friends in India: "Wow, that's such a long trip!" The reaction from every traveler I've met in Australia: "Oh, that's a very short visit." It's a fascinating look at different travel psychologies. For many Western travelers, the default is extended, slow travel. They'll stay in one city for a week, exploring leisurely. For many Indian travelers, the mindset is generally about maximizing a trip…ticking off one city after another in quick succession.

The 13s is a very good deal for the price. Smaller phone + 8 Elite + Good main camera + balanced battery life. The OnePlus 13 is also a good deal but I expected a bit more from it, given it was available for ₹55K on Prime Day.

My wife saw the new Air Pods with real-time translation and she was like “I need these because I can get my nails done, pretend like I’m listening to music, and finally know if the nail ladies are talking crap.” Apple should advertise this use-case.

Android Smartphone brands — quick flaws roundup: Samsung — Only the S series is consistently worth buying. OS on S phones is very smooth, but cameras and haptics need serious improvement. Many users report “green lines”; some get free replacements after many requests, while others are denied service. OnePlus — Quietly improving. OxygenOS is excellent and they offer free green-line replacements for some devices, but cameras still lag behind competitors. Realme — Good hardware, but software updates often ruin the experience. Their camera-focused models are decent, though overall camera quality needs work. Vivo — Strong cameras, but the OS is underwhelming and needs major improvement. Oppo — K and X series are worth considering; most other Oppo lines aren’t. The K13 “gaming” phones often don’t deliver gaming performance, and camera performance is weak. Xiaomi — Good hardware choices, but HyperOS still needs polish. Persistent camera “fog” issues have been reported since the Xiaomi 12 series. Redmi — Focused on profit; I haven’t seen standout Redmi products in the last three years. Poco — Great value for price/specs, but HyperOS and battery optimization are weak points. iQOO — Targets gamers; some models have good cameras, others don’t. OS quality is inconsistent. Motorola — Hit-or-miss lineup and poor post-sale service/repair support in many regions. Nothing — Decent design and effort, but pricing trends high and cameras need improvement. Lava — Improving lately; keep an eye on them. They need to keep polishing the OS and cameras.
