Chelsea getting knocked out in 2022 has no relevance to an award in 2021. Jorginho deserved his 3rd place last season, excellent campaign. Revisionism won’t change that.

@EscoFiles I just wish we went for him first to replace Slot. I know we’ll end up sacking him early into next season with fewer good managers available

@_JackBryant_ Not fully decided like I am with RDZ, but he’s the best out of all options and I like his talent ID + ideas. I just hope he succeeds with the execution

@UTDmrgs @mathewclarke Rice/Phillips v Jorginho/Verratti/Barella. If we “go for it” we get carved open. We didn’t change the game plan, we were always a counter attacking team under him. Shaw’s goal was on the counter. Pens away from winning a Euros after Iceland 5 years earlier. We forget ourselves.

@_JackBryant_ @mathewclarke The reason I hate him is because he pussied out in both finals but mainly the first. Go 1-0 up in the final in ur own backyard then change the game plan and sit back all game, still drives me mental. Couldn’t give a toss about the other they were just better

It takes a high IQ to see thru the facade of players like Rice. You cannot play *elite* football with him. It’s impossible. He’s actually maximized to the upmost extent in Arteta’s system. People still don’t know whether he’s an 8 or 6 because he lacks in either. He can’t receive back to goal (like, at all), can’t turn, can’t pass into a block, has played like 5 through balls in his entire career, has a horrific touch under pressure, has to take a million touches. He’s great at covering distances, at whipping in corners, screening defenses and playing long balls (not better than Enzo still). You maximize a player like this in the exact style Arteta has adopted since he joined. He’s a player built for the old school style of English football which has alluded them of any success in 60 years. Great player at what he does if allowed the platform to do what he does best, not playing for elite systems.

looking back those Rice and Caicedo comparisons were kinda funny. Looking back a lot of things Chelsea fans said was funny

Remember the “Brexit midfield”. Some of you cunts used to mock them. I cry and despair looking at our midfield off the ball now. #LFC

Again, for the thousandth time, that golden ball is doing so much damage to football. This discourse would be nonexistent without its existence.

This Benzema revisionism is bizarre. He was in the Higuain/Cavani bracket throughout the 2010’s, he was getting clowned at Real Madrid for his bad performances. Kane has scored more career goals than him in 200 fewer games. He’s a whole tier above him. What are we doing here?
SG@04gully

Kane is not in the bracket of Benzema/Suarez/Lewandowski, he’s the tier below them with Aguero/Rooney etc. idk why him scoring 50 goals for Bayern puts in that convo

If we’re grouping 6’s and 8’s together, Rodri isn’t even on my bench. The influence that golden ball has is the worst thing about modern football.

Virgil's longevity is also streets above any of the United CBs. He's been the best CB in the league since joining Southampton. Vidic was the best for 2 years - 08/09 and 10/11, Stam for 2 years - 98/99 and 99/00 . Pallister was the best for 1 year - 93/94 Van Dijk has been the undeniable best CB in the league for 7 of 11 seasons - 15/16, 16/17, 18/19, 19/20, 21/22, 23/24 and 24/25. Has a strong case for 2 other seasons, 17/18 and 25/26. The only 2 he definitely wasn't the best were 20/21 which he missed through injury and 22/23. Just in case anyone wants to cry about Rio because he was in the team of the season 6 times. 1) it's a popularity vote and players always get it wrong 2) 01/02 - Sol Campbell was the best in the league by a mile. Sami Hyypia was second. Ledley King was third. 04/05 - Ricardo Carvalho was the best in the league, King and Terry was also better than Rio. 06/07 - Carvalho was the best in the league. Vidic was also better than Rio. 07/08 - John Terry was the best in the league that season. Rio had a case for second though Vidic and Carvalho were both better when fit. 08/09 - Vidic was the best in the league that season. Rio had a case for second. 12/13 - Vincent Kompany was the best, Jan Vertonghen was second.

🚨 Jamie Carragher on Virgil van Dijk’s peak being clear of ANY CB in Manchester United history: 🗣️ “Listen, I know this will wind a lot of people up but I’m talking about peak level, not longevity, not medals, not nostalgia… just pure, dominant defending at the very highest level. And at his best, Van Dijk was as close to flawless as I’ve ever seen from a centre-back in the Premier League. We’re talking about a defender who went seasons without getting dribbled past… that’s not normal, that’s not even supposed to happen at this level. People will bring up names like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić top players, no doubt, legends of the game. But even them, they had games where you felt they could be got at. With Virgil at his peak, you just didn’t see weaknesses. He had everything pace, power, composure, aerial dominance, leadership… and most importantly, control. Games felt slow around him. Strikers didn’t look like they were playing against a defender they looked like they were trying to solve a problem they couldn’t figure out. And I think that’s the key difference. It wasn’t just that he was good… it was how comfortable he made it look at the highest level, especially in big games; Barcelona, Bayern Munich, whoever it was. So yeah, if you’re asking me peak for peak? I’m taking Virgil van Dijk all day. And I don’t think that’s disrespect… I just think people struggle to separate greatness from dominance.”

Impressively badly researched article especially on the minutes point for Bayern. One look at the minutes played stats on TM you'd realize that Bayern attackers are basically even or have more minutes than Arsenals attack. Improve your propaganda please.

@ArminCFC_ Longevity arguments do my head in, like you said it’s still good to consider, but people put too much importance on it. You’d think people have Barry and Milner in their prem all time XI’s the way they lean on it in arguments.

@KJ_1310 Disagree. He was good, had a brilliant win record, and showed up in some big games when given the chance. 2nd half of 21/22 when we were on for the quad he was quality. He wasnt any worse than Ox, but he’s very popular while Keita is apparently shite. Don’t get it.
