The Other Hat I Wear Last night I escorted Jeffrey to the airport. He is off to school….. again. In the car, I was not Founder. Not a CEO. Not a strategist. I was just a mother. Each time my sons fly out, I write them a card. I remind them that I love them, that I am cheering for them, that they must be kind, dream big. Love God. It is my small ritual of release. Last night, he handed me a card too. I caught my breath. I read it. And I cried. Hard. I thought I was used to the separation. I am not. Not yet. Leadership has many layers. One of mine is this: loving deeply and letting go anyway. Yes, I want him to go out into the world and find his life. To succeed. To soar. And I will always cheer him on. But behind the strong exterior of a leader is a mother who will miss her son terribly. And that, too, is part of the work of legacy. #MotherhoodAndLeadership #LettingGoWithLove #LegacyInMotion

Last year alone I attended in total 15 weddings and I was over the moon about it because well, my friends had chosen commitment over lejaleja. However that happiness didn’t last because as of today, only 4 of them are still married while the rest are back on the streets. That statistic alone is heartbreaking. 15 weddings and only 4 still standing says a lot about the times we’re in. We celebrate the wedding day louder than we prepare for the marriage life. Lately, People invest in Venues, Photos, Hashtags, Matching outfits and forget to invest in Emotional maturity, Conflict resolution, Financial discipline, Forgiveness and Patience which are marriages most important pillars. I’m not an expert in Relationship or Marriage but one thing I know is they aren’t sustained by vibes, chemistry, or even love alone. They survive on character. And sometimes what breaks homes isn’t cheating or abuse, it’s Ego, Constant disrespect, Social media comparisons, Unhealed childhood trauma and Refusing to grow The scary part is Most couples don’t separate because they fell out of love. No. They separate because they never built the tools to handle pressure. Someone will ask, after seeing 11 marriages collapse, what did it teach you? Because sometimes God lets us witness patterns so we don’t repeat them. Well, I decided to pay attention to the 4 standing ones and I realized that there was communication, parental guidance, prayerful and willingness towards making the marriage work. End of tweet.

Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.
